This is just a horrible thing! It is like she drowned herself. I find it interesting because right now with dieting I never realized that water could do that to you.

It's not really 'drowing' in the true sense of the word. She just messed up the balance in her cells with too much water and not enough electrolytes. There is a term for it, that I can't recall, and it's sometimes called water intoxication. I've heard about it happening before in athletes, and I read an article about it, gosh many years ago in Outside Magazine. You need to be drinking a LOT of water to mess yourself up. You'd also need to not be eating or taking in sodium, glucose etc You are probably doing that...if you are drinking huge amts of water, and not eating, you might want to call your doctor and ask for specifics.

I heard this on the news last night! I must say I was disgusted when I heard the sound bites of the women who was a nurse calling in to warn them- the way the one DJ replied- oh we are aware of it, they signed waviers so we are not responsible was a disgrace. I am glad that they got fired!

I looked into it some and it throws off your electorlites and causes your brain to swell among other things. Basically what it comes down to- you can't drink a lot of water in a short period of time and hold it in. You have to expell a good amount of what you take in.

Sometimes these radio DJs just go too far! Many of these on-air personalities are nothing but a bunch of sleaze-bags who will do anything for ratings, including having contests that could actually hurt or kill someone. I know that not all radio contests/DJs are this way, but there are many that cross the line.

As for the water drinking, I read somewhere that the old 8 8 oz. cups rule does not apply to everyone. I think it has something to do with how you're built. I'm very slim with a teeny bladder, and I've found that 3-4 cups of water per day (along with 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of 100% cranberry juice) works just fine for me. I've tried the 8 8 oz. cups of water rule and I've been in the bathroom every 5 minutes (literally) peeing it all out. It just doesn't work for me and I'm sure that there are others who can't do it either.

I've never heard of anything like this. I thought water was safe. I don't think I could hold two gallons of water, though. That's a ton of water. It's so sad that something like this has happened. They should have warned all of the contestants of all the dangers, and if I was a contestant, I would have asked someone to inform me of them. You always need to be aware of the circumstances, regardless to what you're doing.

This is a local morning shore from where I live. Last I heard that the 3 DJs plus 7 others were fired and they are determining whether or not they can have criminal charges brought against them. A civil suit has already been filed.

It's pretty sad...

WATER needed per day: half your weight in ounces...50 pound person, 25 ounces of water. I believe if you excercise you should drink a little more while excercising. Because your body is losing fluid through sweat. Hope this helps...

Ok, the radio station should never have done that, BUT comeon folks, lets use our heads. Common sense would tell you, wouldn't it, that that is just NOT safe to do? All for a stupid video game. Unbelievable. You have to think where her mind was at.

Thank you, I am also one of those. When I drink too much water I get a headache, and am in the bathroom so much I shouldn't even leave it, I'm there 3-4 mins. later.

I have heard of this... saw something on 20/20 i think about how fraternitys were using it during hazing until some kids died. I think it is so sad that she was trying to get something for her kids and she wound up dead.
