This story made me want to knock this woman up side the head and get a little sense in her. If she truly loved her kids as she claims, she would want to be with them. Why did she even have them. I hope when she is old, they find her to boring to be around or take care of.

I don't understand this point of view beacuse it is soooo not me, but I understand there are women that prefer to have their lives over sharing their childrens. *I don't necessarily think that it's wrong - I'm just hugely - GIGANTICALLY - *disappointed for her kids. *I could never pay no attention to my kids happenings out of want....I can barely do it when it's necessary. *

Sure we all need a break and a separate identity, but to not want to read bedtime stories? Is that part of the "child centered society" she is referring to? That is just crazy. I feel so sorry for those children. They are missing materna love. You can't get that from a nanny no matter how good they are!

She sounds like a very self centered woman who cares not about anything but herself. I wonder how exciting her children with think she is when she's sitting in the old folks home someday.

wow. How selfish. Why did this woman have kids then??? Has our self-centered society come to this?? And those poor, poor kids. If your own mom is bored with you - what is that going to do for their self worth in a few years??

I'm with Claire - too bored to read bedtime stories?? Come on. Those are priceless moments. Sure reading the same book time and time again are boring, but it doesn't last forever. OMG, these are your kids for crimmeny sakes!! Again why did this woman have kids??

Just sad.

IMO these women don't need lobotomies just BC. If you're not going to love your children and rear them, don't have them.

As for her "friend" it must be great to have an enabler who make it ok to not care for your children. Those 2 make each other feel better about having kids to treat the like accessories that may or may not match with their outfits then maybe they chould have just gone shopping instead of getting pregnant.

Unbelieveable, no elderly home for them, left out in the cold, just like they did to their kids.

The author is taking the exact opposite approach to those women who feel that their children are their ENTIRE life - those women who subjugate themselves to their children.

She has some valid points written in between the lines - you don't have to supress you, as an individual, once you become a mother. I believe that it is healthy for children to see mother's who put themselves first sometimes, who teach their children how to be self sufficient, and who show children that it is okay to have outside interests.

I believe that either end of the extreme - either this author's view or the all-consumed mother - is unhealthy for a child. It only shows them part of the big picture of being a part of a family.

Moms don't have to give up their entire lives, they do have to make sacrifices though. I see these kids being second, make that third class, citizens. As if they don't deserve respect, attention, and gasp their Mother showing up at a play. Quite frankly, the implication in the article implies stay at home Moms are boring and ruin their kids. Well, hmmmm...make a defense for yourself with your article if you need to but don't use it to fire on people who are actually doing their jobs. She needs her husband to stay home, I'll be he'd take some interest in their kids and she can go spend all of her time on herself and the kids still get a fair shake. If her heart isn't in it why punish the kids?

I agree, we should all strive for a more balanced perspective. Giving to your kids all the time is not great - they turn into self-centered brats who demand $6000 birthday parties (oh, wait that was the parents doing that) and grow up thinking their kids are boring.

We need to model to our children the values we want them to have. I agree, a self-centered mom is as detrimental as the all-sacraficining martyr of a mom. Our children are watching - we want to raise boys who will respect women but be men and we need to raise girls who will have their own self worth and not tolerate being treated as second class citizens. I am just sorry that she (the author) finds it all so boring.
