GASTON, N.C. -- An 11-year-old boy was fatally shot on a roadside as his stepfather and another man got out of their vehicles to continue an argument that started at a convenience store, authorities said.

Kenneth Anderson, 11, died Friday afternoon, less than a day after he was wounded on a road near his home.

The incident began Thursday night when Kenneth, his mother and stepfather were leaving a convenience store on N.C. Highway 46 west of Gaston, Northampton County Sheriff's Maj. Bill Wheeler said.

They stepfather exchanged words with another driver whose car was sitting at the store's exit, said sheriff's Capt. Daryl Harmon. As their car pulled around the other driver's vehicle, the stepfather made some comment about why the driver wasn't using a turn signal, Harmon said.

The family then got in their car to drive home, Wheeler said. As they turned into a road toward their home, the other man's truck pulled behind them.

"Both vehicles stopped, both drivers exited and words were exchanged again," Wheeler said. Kenneth's mother got out of the car, apparently "trying to quell the situation, and the suspect produced a small handgun and fired a round, striking the child."

Harmon said Kenneth was shot when he got out of the car to try to talk his mother into getting back into the car with him.

Investigators believe the man was firing at the stepfather and that the two men didn't know each other. Kenneth was shot in the forehead, Harmon said.

Kenneth was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he died early Friday afternoon.

Authorities issued a first-degree murder warrant for Robert Lee Vincent of Garysburg, who turned 65 on Thursday. Wheeler said he was believed to be driving a primer-gray pickup truck and could be armed and dangerous.

Harmon said authorities identified Vincent through witness descriptions and a lineup.

Such a tragic story. So sorry that a young boy had to die for something so stupid.

I see road rage all the time, I personally dont try to cause it, but people can drive like jerks (tailgaiting) what does it prove? nothing! I love it when people speed past you only to get stuck at the red light with you. I do think about people that may carry guns with them while driving. Which is a scary thought.
If someone every waves a gun at you while driving take down their license and call the police asap!
People think they have such power on the roads and that they own the streets...ok Im done venting...

It rips me apart to know that jerks that are on the road make others pay for their mistakes and stupidity. I try to have grace, but I just get so infuriated. My parents were in a horrible near-fatal auto accident 9/05 that left my father a paraplegic. Some woman blew through a stop sign 60 mph and sent their extended bed/cab flipping through the air, splitting into shreds. She walked away with a broken nose. People don't realize how much (and for how long) others pay for their road rage.. so tragic. So very very tragic.

How can 2 people get so mad over something as stupid as whether or not someone used a turn signal? That's something that no one would have remembered 10 minutes down the road. Now the family will always remember that's the day their son got killed and the man will probably spend quite a while in jail. It always seems that the children are the ones that get hurt when adults act like idiots.
