Benning soldier dies in Iraq
Sgt. Leroy Segura Jr. is second death in 19 days for area
BY MICK WALSH
Staff Writer

Sgt. Leroy Segura Jr., a 23-year-old combat engineer from Fort Benning's 362nd Engineer Company, died Friday from injuries suffered when his Humvee rolled over in Habbaniyah, Iraq.

The Army released the news of Segura's death on Monday.

Segura became the second soldier with ties to this area to die fighting in the Middle East in the last 19 days.

Sgt. Morgan Kassin, a 10th Mountain Division soldier, formerly assigned to Fort Benning, died in Afghanistan on July 16 when his platoon encountered small arms fire during combat operations. He left a wife and two daughters in Phenix City.

In an astounding coincidence, both Segura and Kassin hail from Clovis, N.M., a city of 34,000 on the state's border with Texas. Segura, who arrived on post only a month before his company deployed on July 5, became the first Fort Benning soldier to die in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006. Segura, who was single, entered the Army on Oct. 30, 2002.

I'm so sick of our people losing their lives in this. It just feels like another Vietnam. I supported Bush at first, but this is just not right. With all the military intelligence and NASA electronic equipment we have, this has just gone on too long. I know these families are proud, and they should be, but it's just getting too senseless.

I wasn't trying to stir up anyone-
When Maria called us 4am Sunday morning she was understandably upset
Now I know reason why. She had mentioned this Sgt Segura several times and he was
a ' Good Troop'.
I guess the goosebumps really affected me when I realized and reread article that the 2 young men are from same hometown and a small one at that.
I ask for Positive thoughts for their families and I'm sure prayers would help too.

That is understandable. . I just pray that we can bring our troops home soon.

It is also upsetting for the entire US when we open up the news paper daily to see a list of soliders killed and things not getting better over there. It's mildly frusterating to feel so helpless and see no hope of it ending anytime soon.

I will send many good thoughts for your family, and that is entirely too close to home. I hope Maria is doing well and can find a way to cope with this devestation constructively. Good luck to you as well.

What horrible news. I will keep my fingers crossed and pray that Maria's time overseas goes by quickly and without harm. Please pass on our Thanks for the brave job she is doing!
