Sgt. Leroy Segura Jr., a 23-year-old combat engineer from Fort Benning's 362nd Engineer Company, died Friday from injuries suffered when his Humvee rolled over in Habbaniyah, Iraq.
The Army released the news of Segura's death on Monday.
Segura became the second soldier with ties to this area to die fighting in the Middle East in the last 19 days.
Sgt. Morgan Kassin, a 10th Mountain Division soldier, formerly assigned to Fort Benning, died in Afghanistan on July 16 when his platoon encountered small arms fire during combat operations. He left a wife and two daughters in Phenix City.
In an astounding coincidence, both Segura and Kassin hail from Clovis, N.M., a city of 34,000 on the state's border with Texas. Segura, who arrived on post only a month before his company deployed on July 5, became the first Fort Benning soldier to die in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006. Segura, who was single, entered the Army on Oct. 30, 2002.
