I wrote about my experiences living in both England and South Africa on work permits.
My husband is a pastor and brought over a youth pastor and his wife from South Africa (they are white South Africans - long story). They had a child here. The child is a US citizen. He is eligible for foodstamps, but they are NOT. They are here legally on religious worker visas, but are low income being youth pastors.
I know that when a child is born here, they are eligible for HUD housing (therefore the family would be eligible for HUD housing based on income.) In this particular case, the parents, here legally, are NOT eligible for foodstamps. She was eligible for WIC while pregnant because the child would be a US citizen, so she received the WIC benefit while pregnant and continued to do so after the birth since the child is under age 6. However, they were not going to receive foodstamps until the baby was on formula/eating food and are only eligible for the baby's individual amount, not the whole family amount.
Do illegal immigrants get foodstamps while our youth pastor and his wife, here legally, don't? Something would be very wrong. Any American citizen (any baby born here by our current laws) should be eligible for benefits. That just makes sense. However, to give illegals foodstamps while those working here legally on work permits do not qualify would be wrong.
Does anyone know if illegals (adults) qualify for foodstamps or is it just the children born here who qualify?
