MONROE, NC -- A baby is clinging to life Sunday night after swallowing cocaine in his Monroe home.
Saturday evening around 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a call from Union Regional Medical Center about a 9-month-old who had ingested cocaine.
The baby's father lives in the 1300 block of Trull Place. Police said it appears the baby's father, Brandon Scott Lewis, 22, was doing cocaine with his two friends, Jonathan Henderson and Matt Autry. Police said the men left the child alone, and unsupervised.
"They had [cocaine] on the table," said Lieutenant Shawn Parler with the Monroe Police Department.
When they returned to the room, they discovered that the child had eaten cocaine.
Lieutenant Parlar isn't sure exactly how much time elapsed, or how much cocaine the baby ingested before Lewis and his two friends returned.
"Enough time to go to the kitchen, go to the bathroom and one stepped outside," said Parler.
Parlar said that when they came back into the room, the child was having seizures and convulsing. The men apparently noticed that the cocaine was gone, and drove the child to the hospital.
Police said Lewis drove his son to Union Regional. An emergency room witness said Lewis signed paperwork, went outside with the boy in his arm and returned a few minutes later. It was then that ER staff noticed the boy's condition.
Lewis and Henderson, 37, have been charged with possession of cocaine. Autry, 19, was charged with possession of cocaine and delivery of cocaine.
Police said all three men were also charged with assault.
If the baby dies, police said the men could be charged with manslaughter or murder.
