LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears was charged Friday with misdemeanor counts of hit and run and driving without a valid license in connection with a parking lot crash in August, prosecutors said. If convicted, the singer could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for each count, said Nick Velasquez, spokesman for the city attorney's office.

Messages left with Spears' attorneys were not immediately returned.

The accident occurred on Aug. 6, Velasquez said.

Spears, 25, was captured by paparazzi that day steering her car into another vehicle as she tried to turn into a spot in a Studio City parking lot. After assessing the damage to her own car only, she was shown on paparazzi video walking away.

Three days after the accident, the owner of the other vehicle filed a police report, and investigators later determined that Spears does not have a license, officials said.

"A check of ... records shows that no California license has ever been issued to Ms. Spears," Velasquez said.

Spears was scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 10, but she is not required to appear.

The case adds to the singer's woes, coming days after a court commissioner ordered her to undergo random drug and alcohol testing in her child custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Her management firm recently dropped her, meanwhile, and her performance at this year's MTV Video Music Awards was widely panned.

I just read that before I logged on here. I cant (well I can) believe it!! I think she should go to jail so she can go dry out. Is she that stupid that she cant see that she is acting like an idiot and needs to grow up. SHe just bugs me. I am almost to the point where I do not think that she should have her kids. Not until she pulls her head out of her A**

This is pathetic! She's been been photographed driving all over Los Angeles. Even if she has a Louisiana license, (which I DOUBT) she still should act like a grown up. I doubt being made to have random drug testing will affect her. I feel so sorry for those kids. They didn't asked to be born to such an immature mommy.

that idiot needs to grow up. how dumb can she be?? really? and her career is basically done. she needs to cut her losses now. before we know it she is gonna be on one of those has been celebrity shows crying about how bad her life is now that she is no longer popular, and has no fans left. and before she knows it she'll be broke. who takes care of her money for her now? if she is as stupid as she seems to be, someone has to be taking care of her finances for her. maybe she should go to jail for a while, maybe it will be a big enough kick in the arse for her to wake up. what a tool.

If she is going to jail do you think the judge is going to treat her special? I mean look at what happened to Paris Hilton? She got release then she went back to jail. I know a lot of celebrities gets away a lot of things and maybe instead of let say a year in jail they may feel sorry for her and let her do 45 days in jail instead. Do you think that's justice? I think she needs to go to jail maybe gives her a break and some time to think about of what she did.
