"Doesn't Canada have a "baby bonus?" If they don't now, I know that did at one point in time."

Nope. Not so. We also don't get the big breaks on income taxes that people in the US do. As a single mother with a modest income I only got about $120 month break on my taxes (and we are heavily taxed here). In the US you can actually get more back from your taxes than you paid in. The is NEVER going to happen in Canada. We don't get much of a break for kids.

Good reply, anniebananie! And, THANK YOU, for bringing it back to the original post. I agree. Bad idea for all the reasons you listed, too. As I originally said.

Chiming in a little late here. LOVED Claire's first post in this thread. And also loved anniebananie's post. Very well written.

Bad idea all around. I agree with whoever said that this is a politician just saying what people want to hear. Do you really think she will follow through IF she is even elected. Do you really think they are going to care once they get your vote?? Most likely NOT.

You know its funny that Hilary is talking about this because its almost the same thing as what the Germans has. Its like Kinderguild (not sure if I spelled it right) I don't know exactly how much women are getting but a friend of ours she has two kids and she is getting 600 euros a month. That's like $700 something this is for working and SAHM. But then again with 19% tax in everything I guess that covers the payment every month.

Well, I'm just seeing this thread and I have to say that I think it's a wonderful proposal, but very difficult to manage and would need a lot of tweaking. I don't understand why most of you are so against it, 20 billion a year is nothing compared with Bush's spending. She will of course cut defense spending and gear a small % towards this. Not hard at all to do when he has spent 100s of billions on this war. I think 3,000 at birth would be better and it could go into that child's state 529 account and back to the treasury upon death. I think that would benefit the lower class children more than anything else we could do for them. I also think the whole tax bracket/rate and welfare distrubution system need to be redone. There is so much that needs fixing, I can't wait for Hillary to be in office!

For me, this has nothing to do with Bush, the War, defense spending, or anything else. I am against this proposal for one simple reason.

Government Control of my life. This is yet another way that the Government is sticking it's nose in my life, continuing to try and wrestle more of my hard earned dollars away from me. It is simply one more way to erode my personal liberties by taking from me and giving to someone else. It's called redistribution of wealth, and I'm having none of it.

There actually is another reason for this. It's not the Government's responsibility to give every child money when they are born! It's the parents responsibility take care of their children, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. It's also the parent's responsibility to teach their children how to manage their finances, be they large or small. It's about personal responsibility - this proposal, should it ever come into law, would remove yet another layer of personal responsibility of the American public.

If someone wants to live in a nanny state, fine. But not me. I've worked too hard in my life to have the Government tell me how to live it.

OK. Off my soapbox now... running behind the wall before the tomatoes get thrown at me!
