In our part of the country (central VA), it's called biosludge, and ours comes from of all places, Washington DC. It's treated at a facility before it's spread on the fields, so anything like ecoli is removed. It does stink terrible if the farmer doesn't cut it into the fields when he's spreading it. However, I don't think it smells any worse than the chicken sh** that the farmer next to us uses to fertilize his fields every spring and fall. THAT stuff is foul (no pun intended, really!).
ugh, we are surrounded by open fields so ofcourse we get a lovely stench of pig poop in the spring and the fall. its yucky smelling, but a fact of country life. we use cow manure and soemtimes goat manure in our vegetable garden, it has to be atleast a year old before we use it though. it doesn't smell that bad. but oh well. its a fact of life you gotta live with when next to open fields.
