Everyone's heard about the small town of Crandon,WI now because of the shooting of 6 teens/young adults by an off duty police officer, who then shot himself.
It's really bugging me how much the local news chanels are dragging this story out. I know it's human interest to want to know the full story, but it seems like the news crews are waiting around just to cover each individual funeral, they are so desperate for news coverage on the issue they are interviewing kids off the street, filming the school kids as they get off the busses for their first day back since the shootings, interviewing the only florist in town because he's going to be so busy with all the funeral flowers, even interviewed the Florist's daughter(who looks to be middle school age). Every day there is something on the news about Crandon. The families of the victims made it very clear that they do not want to be bothered by the press, they want their privacy! They aren't leaving though, people in that town must be getting really annoyed by now. Each day the reporters talk about the town trying to regroup and move past the tragedy and get back to a normal routine.................well they can't if reporters won't LEAVE! I'm willing to bet they will show footage of the outside of the funeral homes on each day of each funeral?!!! That just annoys me and i don't even live near that town!

My thoughts exactly. We don't have television channels anymore but last spring we were traveling and stayed in a hotel and had news on our radio. We like news. This was the same time that that bus with the baseball players drove off the overpass in Alanta and several were killed. Very sad, I agree, but it was a bus accident! How much can you report about a bus accident? And yet that was all CNN was covering for like three days! Of course on the way home, I think it was Anna Nicole Smith's funeral started... I almost started missing the bus coverage!

I do agree with you.

But... Journalists are ruthless. In a big city like NY or LA - this story would be big news. In a tiny town like Crandon, firefighter rescuing a cat from a tree might make the news. (yes I'm exaggerating, but I hope you see the point). It's a small town place where everyone knows everyone and nothing bad (like that) could be even imaginable. Of course the news crews are going to exploit that. That's just what they do.

Again, I don't agree with it. But sadly, it can't be helped unless the general public boycotts such stories - and it's proven over and over again that we can't.

Now why shouldn't news stations be capitalizing on the pain? It's become the way of the news...

I was annoyed with this too. They broadcast a statement from the family saying that they want to be left alone to grieve and then the next day they are still showing more footage from Crandon. It's really trouble some that they aren't respecting the families wishes.
