Leader Of Polygamist Sect Arrested

August 29, 2006 12:08 p.m. EST

Mary K. Brunskill - All Headline News Staff Writer
Las Vegas, Nevada (AHN) - Warren Steed Jeffs, the leader of polygamist sect wanted in two states on suspicion of sexual misconduct, has been arrested, the FBI said Tuesday.

Jeffs, 50, was arrested in southern Nevada after a highway patrol trooper pulled him over on Interstate 15 just north of Las Vegas late Monday. One of his wives, Naomi Jeffs, and a brother, Isaac Steve Jeffs, were also in the car. They were not arrested but are being interviewed by the FBI.

Jeffs is the leader the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has been on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list since May for allegedly arranging marriages between underage girls and older men, with a $100,000 reward offered for information leading to his capture.

He is charged in Utah with two felony counts of rape as an accomplice for allegedly arranging the marriage of a teenage girl to an older man in Nevada. In June, he was indicted on a charge of arranging a marriage between a 16-year-old girl and a married man and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

FBI spokesman David Staretz said Jeffs was in federal custody in Las Vegas pending a court hearing on a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. It was not immediately clear if Jeffs would face extradition to Arizona or Utah.

Jeffs was indicted in June on an Arizona charge of arranging a marriage between a 16-year-old girl and a married man, and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Glad to hear he's been arrested but unfortunately someone else inside that sect is going to take over where he left off, and it will keep happening.
I hate seeing how they keep their women sheltered, uneducated and pregnant so that it is harder for them to flee.

that is so true they were talking about it on tv today and they said even from jail he will be able to control them so sad the whole thing. and why authorities let it get this big is just crazy.

I remember the question of why authorities don't rush in and arrest them all being brought up in one of those investigative shows like "20/20 and Dateline". The Investigator being interviewed said it's very difficult to make an arrest without one of these young women coming forward to report that they are being sexually assulted by grown men and forced against their will into plural marriages. They are just that controlled and sheltered that they are unable to escape and flee to authorities. It's also a way of life for them, they don't know any better that it's wrong for a grown man to have sex with a girl their age.
After hearing that interview i guess it makes sense why they aren't able to rush in and arrest them all. It's got to be equally frustrating for authorities, because im sure some of these investigators have daughters or grand-daughters themselves.

I actually know this guy's brother (not the one that was in the car with him).....he is one of my customer's (we sell mfg supplies)....and I talk to him on a weekly basis. Just last week he was commenting on how his brother has been missing and is wanted by the FBI.

I'm so glad they caught him without having a showdown. I though for sure this would turn into another Waco. From what I read if you questioned his teaching or didn't follow his rules he would separate the family and marry off the woman to another man, leaving behind the kids. Sick.

I think i saw this guy on Dr. Phil recently. I wasn't aware that he was with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
