A school just suspended a second grade boy for a day for drawing a picture of himself pointing a squirt gun at another kid. They said it goes against there zero tolerance policy on weapons...just a picture with stick figures

Political correctness run amok!! I think someone could have sat down with the "child" and explained that that wasn't an appropriate picture. If you read the article he was also drawing cyclops, king tut....all those things little boys like to draw. My ds used to draw all kind of pics with swords and shields and dripping blood, and he's the most pacifist mild mannered child at 15....it's just a little boy thing. I noticed in the online poll 88% of people thought it was an overreaction. GEEZ!!!

Oh for heavens sake i can't believe that. Riley should be suspended then. I have seen pictures that he has drawn at school that have guns in them. He draws soldiers and he draws starwars and sometimes they have guns.......Come on the kid ment no harm.

So what do they do to the little bullies out on the playground kicking, hitting, name calling, etc---Are they arrested for assault? I doubt anything is done, and in my opinion these are the kids needing a suspension before this child who just drew a picture.

This happened to a 13 yr old a few months ago. He was given a 5 day suspension. His drawing doesn't even look lke a gun to me...

in the 2nd grader situation... by only reading the topic i thought it was ridiculous,, but after reading that

there was 'me' written above the one with the gun,, and a name above the other and the pic was given to the other kid,,,, that CAN be interpreted as a threat,as a teacher AND as a mother, I would want action taken....

the 13 year old though,, that was a doodle on homework,, not given to anyone on purpose, and my *almost 18* senior and I both do NOT think it's a gun,, so that one seems totally ridiculous to me

Yet how do they handle bullying situations? Hmmm? Our school didn't do enough when ds had a death threat by a fellow first grader, or when the kid put his hands around ds' neck.

Oh, and they have a zero tolerance policy, too, and this same kid got his classmates to chant, "Kill xx(ds)." In class. Just first graders playing around. Right.

That is one of the worst stories I've heard all day. How horrible...

This is all over the news in our area. Personally, I think it is ridiculous. I cannot believe the parents of the other boy (the one who the child gave the picture too - who is a friend of the boy) brought the picture into the school to deal with. Why did they not call the mother of the boy if they had a problem with the picture. Unless this child had a history of bullying this kid and such, no action (other than possibly talking to him and telling him it isn't appropriate) should have been taken. This is a good example of political correctness and zero tolerance gone amuk.
