I live an hour or so away from detroit, so I have seen it on the news. I am just slightly concerned. In fact I was at a local highschool football game and I saw the players take their mouthpeices out and then they all bumped hands. I said "ewwwww", and my husband said, what, they didn't touch each other. OK.....
Now my 16 year old son as heard about it, and is slightly freaking out. I guess they had it in the next town over. I said, well don't kiss anyone, and wash your hands.
I also asked him if he wanted me to send him to school with hand gel and lysol.

Not really. It has been out there forever. People are just becoming more aware of it. I had patients in the nursing home with it years ago. We just use proper precautions.

I did receive an email from the athletic director at the high school detailing how they are safe guarding against it.

I guess since I am only vaguely aware that it exists, I'm not worried by it. After my mom's illness last summer, it makes me even more aware that someone can pick up a potentially life-threatening bug anywhere, simply by being at the wrong place at the wrong time when your immune system is compromised. We do what we can to avoid illness, but I don't want to live in a bubble either.

A child had it in the next town over from us. Yes, I am nervous about it and chalk it up to another reason we should stay locked in our bubble forever.

We've got it here in PA. Just got a call from the superintendent of the jr. high school yesterday that a freshman football player has it, luckily my dd is in elementary school, but in the same district.

Two counties over from where we are in Central VA a teenager contracted it and died. They closed schools for a day while they were scrubbed and santized. There has been a confirmed outbreak in the public school system in our county. My son goes to a small private school, but they are still taking precautions - they are scrubbing and disenfecting all of the lockers, requiring the upper school students to take their gym clothes home daily (so the lockers and be disenfected daily), etc... So far no outbreaks.

It wouldn't worry me near as much as it does it if wasn't so close to home.

I too am in health care and have no concerns what so ever. I guess we have known about it forever so I don't worry about it. the first line of defensive is to stop over using antibacterial soaps and the like. we are the ones creating the superbugs. and I do have to disagree with the person who said hospitals are trying to hide it. we have signs posted all over our hospital asking people to wash their hands to stop the spread of MRSA. I think we see what we know. I see all sorts of medical info that my friends don't seem to notice. they all figure if it's important it will be on the news. well, MRSA has been out there for years. I distintly remember it being talked about when all these antibaterial products started popping up. People choose to use the products which most doctors advise against due to the potential of super bugs.

Nope, not really worried about it. Wash your hands and keep your environment clean. I wonder how many of these schools are causing their own problems by all this obsessive cleansing? What products are they using? Antibacterial or non? It'd be an interesting study.

I'm starting to get concerned. Last week a high schooler was diagnosed in the Sacramento area. The last two days there have been two more diagnosed in the next town over. It takes me 3 minutes to get to the school where it is.

Also i've heard that Folsom Prison is rampant with this. A large amount of the inmates have it.
