I just read this story online about how Sandra Day O'Connor's dh has Alzheimer's and is in a facility. He doesn't remember her and has fallen in love with another woman at the facility. It says she happy for him, and I'm sure she knows it's not his fault, but on some level it must hurt to know the man you were married to for 50 years with and had children with doesn't remember you but loves someone else. Alzheimer's is such a heart breaking disease.

I don't know how she can be so strong through that. That would just be painful to watch.

How sad. I;m pretty sure I couldn't be happy for my husband.....just heartbroken. She's an amazing lady to say the least.

My grandmother had alzheimers, back in the early and mid 90s, before there was much press about it. I can tell you first hand how devastating a disease it is. I can imagine how, although rationally she understands that this is not her husband's fault, emotionally it must tear her apart.

It is very painful to watch someone you love "lose their marbles" over a period of years. At first it's just little things - forgetting keys, forgetting when you last ate. It becomes more progressive. Sometimes the person becomes violent. Eventually, the person forgets everyone around them.

I'm sorry. I went off on a tangent. If anyone ever wishes to learn more about Alzheimer's you can go to Alzheimer's Association | Home or read "The Thirty Six Hour Day", a book about living with someone with the disease.

I can't even read the story in the link. I'm already teared up just thinking about it. I too experienced alzheimer's first hand. My grandmother that raised me had it and I ended up trying to take care of her and the household and bills and such, at the age of 13,,, I finally had to 'give up' and was taken to live elsewhere. It's a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE disease and heartbreaking in so many ways and on so many levels. My heart breaks for them.
