I just read on a yahoo link that Terri has been told and she has told their children How sad for them. My thoughts are with the Irwin family. My sons loved his show and were sad to hear this when I turned on the news

This is just too sad, but we (dh and I) always joked he would die young due to some freakishly stupid thing he would do with those animals. It is hard to get stung by a stingray in the chest - foot no, but chest? He must have been trying to ride the poor ray. Still, I will miss him and enjoyed his enthusiasm for animals.

Sounds like Bindi was there ETA, she wasn't there, he was just filming for her show.

Quote:
Irwin was in the area to film pieces for a show called "Ocean's Deadliest" with Phillippe Cousteau, grandson of Jacques, Irwin's manager and friend John Stainton told CNN's "American Morning." But weather had prevented the crew from doing work for that program, said Stainton, so Irwin decided to do some softer features for a new children's TV show he was doing with his daughter, Bindi.

"He came over the top of a stingray that was buried in the sand, and the barb came up and hit him in the chest," said Stainton.

That was from CNN the Aussie news says it happened in the water

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20349888-2,00.html

Quote:
"The footage shows him swimming in the water, the ray stopped and turned and that was it," said boatowner Peter West, who viewed the footage afterwards.

"There was no blood in the water, it was not that obvious ... something happened with this animal that made it rear and he was at the wrong position at the wrong time and if it hit him anywhere else we would not be talking about a fatality."

Well, you knew he wasn't going to go out with heart disease or lung cancer. But I totally didn't see him dying from a stringray. Not to make light of it or anything, but he definitely died doing something he loved - his life's work. It's a shame that he had to die so young though.

This is just so heart breaking.

I watched the Animal Planet all last night as they paid tribute to him

I don't care about that horrible day the media played out about him and his son bob with the croc. I don't care to discuss it at length here either...I just feel badly that a man with his enthusiam, passion and spirit is gone so early.

I was teared up all last night just watching all of his shows. His poor children. The good part for them though, is that their dad was loved world wide and they have all these shows and videos and memories of him that they can carry with them for their lifetime. The things he said about his kids last night on the show jsut melted my heart. I am so glad they will have that on tape for them to watch over and over again!

I always figured he'd die young because of his own stupidity - not for just swimming over a normally shy & non-aggressive animal, and then a freak accident. I heard on the news that more people have died due to kittens than sting rays in the last 20 years.

I feel the same way-
My son wasn't really into to him it was more dh and I ! I think that he was pretty awesome !! The one thing that has always impressed me was the fact that no matter how famous he had become he never changed. He even showed up on the red carpet in his shorts and boots! I am so sad that this had to happen.

I totally agree. And to think they have caught his death on film. I shudder to think of how many news media outlets will try to get ahold of it and show it. Let the man die in pieace and let us mourn him. I don't need to see his death, I want to remember him in life.
