THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.

It is believed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and is yet to be told of her husband's death.

I posted right after you within a minute. I apologize- this is different

I can not imagine them releasing this news without telling his wife first- that is just wrong

Everyone on my boards is shocked they didn't tell her first.

I called my mom at 11pm to let her know. She's a major fan of his.

I'm so sad for his family.

omg! You have a different report than what I got. I find it very hard to believe that they haven't notified Terry yet, there is just NO way that she doesn't know. They are SO careful about releasing news like that. Surely she has some way to communicate, she has little ones and you just don't trekk across anywhere without being able to communicate back home. How horrible

I have online friends in Australia and they posted that one to me. It's from the Australian news service. It was posted so fast that she hadn't been told yet. I would hope she knows by now.

The Queensland Australia Police Service website reports that the family has been notified.

Poor Terri, Bindi and Bob. My son will also be so sad. Now, that's a family that lives life to the fullest. He died doing what he loves.

I just read about it this morning. It couldn't believe it. Stingray deaths are really rare. What a shame.
