This is so disturbing. They found a new chemical in baby formula from the lining of the cans, that acts like a hormone and has caused issues in the lab animals. It is more concentrated in the liquid forms, but both forms are tainted.

Is anything safe anymore? That is scary. With my ds (my oldest) we didn't give him formula but I did pump breastmilk full-time (15 mos ) I often wonder about the plastic bottles that we used since some plastics are known to cause hormonal changes. My ds has ADHD.

The lining in the baby formula can, the lining in almost any canned good and the plastic bottles you use in the house are all the same chemical.

This wiki page is a fairly good overview.
Bisphenol A - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bisphenol A current uses are as a primary monomer in polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. Bisphenol A is also used as an antioxidant in plasticizers and as a polymerization inhibitor in PVC.

Polycarbonates are widely used in many consumer products, including sunglasses, CDs, water and food containers, and shatter-resistant baby bottles. Some polymers used in dental fillings and sealants also contain bisphenol A. Epoxy resins containing bisphenol A are used to line nearly all metal food cans, including liquid and powdered infant formula containers

If this is true, then why is infant formula singled out among all the other food we eat from cans and plastics? Just another reason to make us that couldn't or can't breastfeed, or choose not to, to feel guilty?

I think you hit the nail on the head. I planned to breastfeed, mostly for financial reasons, but I never got milk in. I have never gotten so many rude comments from strangers as I did when I'd have to stock up on formula (thank goodness for WIC or I don't know how we would have done it!). What did they want me to do, starve my baby?

Not trying to defend either side of the issue but I think it's because infants are the most vulnerable and formula or breastmilk is their 1st form of nutrition (their 'building blocks' so to speak). People are becoming more and more aware of what we are putting into our bodies. I don't even let my kids drink out of plastic cups with certain recycling numbers imprinted on the bottom. We've been trying to avoid plastic as much as possible.
