I heard this on the national news tonight and was stunned! The percentage is almost 50% in the African American community in teen girls, and about 1/4 of all teen girls. Stunning!! Here's an article with the info:

One in 4 Teen Girls Has a Sexually Transmitted Disease

It makes me glad we decided to start our 13 yr old on the HPV vaccine. It wasn't an easy decision. My gynocologist said she sees so much of it and she absolutely would give it to her own daughter.

Frightening!

Well I still haven't given my 17 year old the HPV vaccine, but I may "think" about it before she goes to college and discuss it with her doctor. I of course am stunned that that many of them are even having sex, much less have an STD. Yikes, I wish I lived in a bubble.

I think all girls should have the HPV vaccine, hopefully this statistic will help nudge those reluctant parents along...

Of course the vaccine won't do anything about all the other STDs. The answer is that they need to be having no sex or protected sex.

This is exactly why I'm against abstinence only education. It doesn't work and it puts people in more danger than if they were adequately educated. Just saying 'don't do it' doesn't work, that should be more than clear by now.

I doubt these girls had abstinence only education. I'm willing to bet most of them have had education about STDs and prevention with condoms. So the condom education isn't working either. It's obviously a much deeper problem than that.
