Obama to confront racial issues - Yahoo! News

Actually this is one of my issues with Obama (that and I'm not sure if he has been around long enough). About a year ago, my husband and I were traveling and listening to the radio and Hannity and Colems of all people. And they mentioned that Obama belonged to a Church who's mission statement was 1. Follow God and 2. Help the black family. It wasn't family in general. When we returned home from our trip, I did look this church up online and this was what was written though since that time this mission statement has been changed.

I don't believe Obama is a racist but I do feel that if a white person was running for office and belonged to a church who's first two points was to help the white family that that wouldn't fly either. Both my husband and I have never really seen this addressed by Obama or even mentioned by the press ever again - other than that Hannity and Colems episode.

So truthfully, I'm kind of glad that Obama has given a little distance to this pastor. Though I'm sure that they are still very tight -- I mean they have been connected for 20 years.

Now this is interesting -- I'm reading closer to my own article (problem you skim!) and this church is a mostly white church. Like I said, I that mission statement, which has since changed, orginally did say to help the black family. Odd.

Obama is supposed to have a speech today addressing what his pastor has said.

I don't think we can judge Obama based off of what his pastor says. We still have free speech in this country and he shouldn't be held accountable for everything everyone he knows says. I agree with your comment though, there is reverse discrimination at times in this country. It definitely wouldn't fly if a church had a mission statement saying they are going to help "the white family". I also think the pastor stepped down, but I don't know if that is a recent event or not.

Obama confronts racial division in US - Yahoo! News

Obama just spoke. And he did a beautiful job. He is such a good speaker! I don't know if there is actions behind those words.

I DONT LIKE HIM.
I didn't like him before, i don't like him now.
the fact that he was linked to that church means he somehow believed and understood their "moto" or statements.
regardless of what he says now...
plus, he doesn't have the experience.
it is very risky to put him in office. JMO
* my fears might be naive, but what if he helps the black community much more, and thus being unfair to others such as hispanic, whites, asians, etc.
I just belive that the #1 thing a president should bring is: equality.
i just have my doubts that he believes in "all races" equal.
look, we've all been judged by one thing or another,
not just black or white.

for being blond, for being fat, for other ethnicities, for where you live, for....

I do wonder, especially since so many white people were involved with this church, did anyone even read the mission statement? Do others know what the mission statement of their church says? Do you even know if there is a mission statement with your church?

I actually like Obama though I'm not sure if I'm voting for him. But I have to admit that mission statement bugged me ... if for no other reason than a white person with a church with that same mission statement would have been considered a racist.

On the other hand I do believe that this election is forcing the U.S. to address some uncomfortable issues -- I don't know what the outcome will be. But at least it is bringing some "stuff" out in the open.

I didn't see his speach so I can't comment on that. I can understand why the purpose could have been to "help the Black family". The statistics on kids raised in 2 parents home vs 1, the disappearance of the black father from the family, the numbers of black males in jail or daed by the time they are 20, etc. I can see that being innocent. when we help one we the the society as a whole. since I don't know all what he was preaching at the time I could be way off but to assume he means just favoring one over another is also wrong. However, what bothers me the most about Obama is his lack of experience. Yes he is a great speaker and if you think I'm dumb enough the believe the reason his people gave for the location of the speech, please tell me about some land you have to sell.

just wanted to add: that I don't agree with everything that comes out of my Priest, however, just about everyone I know knows that I don't agree and so does my Priest. I have even posted here about things I thought were he said was bad. If Obama had the same reservations how come nobody knows about it?

Just because it was the preacher opinion doesn't necessarly mean that everyone in the church (including obama) believes the way the preacher does. The preacher is an individual just like the rest of us.

And the preacher statement shouldn't be considered in, when somebody decides to vote for obama or not.

Dh and I went to the fundraiser in AL for obama and I was really impressed with him and his ideals and statements. If I had the time I would have campaign for him.

Not that I agree 100% with all of his ideals and plans, but I doubt if you will ever fine a candidate that you will agree 100% with.
