Found this article discussing race, faith & politics in the aftermath of this stuff w/ Obama's pastor.
Commentary: Race, faith and politics - CNN.com

The article is quite interesting but so are the comments from readers, after the article, on both sides of the fence. After having read up on this more, read Obama's speech, etc., I have to wonder if the problem that white America is having with this is that they just truly didn't know that black America holds a certain amount of anger/resentment towards white America, and that their churches are not just following a prayer book but also where black traditionally have gone for empowerment, like when trying to earn civil rights?

Then I got to thinking about the folks here on this board. Do any of you have any black friends? I mean real friends -- not someone you might work with and go to lunch with but never see outside work -- but someone who would stand up in your wedding, who you would do anything for - a true best friend? If so, can you talk about racial issues with them? If not, why not? Are there just no black people in your area?

YouTube - Jeremiah Wright, Obama and United Church of Christ

I found this interesting.

I think that I can understand, as much as any middle class white woman from "podunk" Indiana, that blacks have felt oppressed. I struggle with the fact that these issues are preached from the pulpit of a large church. Do I care for his "style" of preaching - the shouting, yelling out from the parishioners etc etc. No. But that is style and my concern is more over content.

His content seems to keep the black community wallowing in these issues instead of rising above them.

hmmm. this is a touchy one. I am always a little wary to discuss these type of things bc i don't want to offend anyone. Personally I don't have any black friends but that's ONLY because I rarely leave my home. lol. Now my dh is a black hispanic. Which is a little different but when we watch CNN or the nightly news he doesn't agree with this type of preaching. was that the question? lol. I can also agree that we have to admit blacks have a right to feel oppressed given history and all, but don't all minority groups?

My problem with this entire issue is if a white politician attended a church that was almost entirely white with a white preacher that pretty much said that exact same thing as Rev. Wright, the whole bunch of them would have been labled as racist.

Yes the black community in the U.S. as a whole has been mistreated but I do believe for everyone to move forward that people are going to have to step away from the talk of hate. Can you really say that such talk does any good? For anyone? JaredandMaggiesMom said it very well when she mentioned, "His content seems to keep the black community wallowing in these issues instead of rising above them."
