What a gift to the parents and their babies. It never occurred to me when the boys were in the NICU that it could be any different. It was exactly as described in the article except that it was painted beautifully and things were kept pretty quiet. They dimmed the lights at night to simulate waking and sleeping cycles for the babies and they tried to include the families in their care.
Although they tried really hard to make it as easy as possible on us, it was really hard to find a place to stand or sit and the boys weren't even next to each other because of space. We felt torn between them and we have no pictures of them together.
The other thing that was really hard was what happen as we were losing them. With Nathanial, he died very quickly and they cleared all the other families out of the NICU to allow us to come in to be with him. With Benjamin, we decided that he had been through enough so they moved us into their isolation room because it was the only place where we could have some privacy to say goodbye. The room was tiny and with both our families there, it was impossible to get everyone in there with us.
