Meijers was doing a photo contest to raise money for the Humane Society. They ended the contest early because someone complained that the Humane Society is anti-hunting. Oh come on!

The Oakland Press: Local News

I give money to the Humane Society as I am an animal lover who wants to see as many of those animals adopted as possible and wants them to be able to promote pet ownership/neutering and spaying, etc. I am absolutely fine with hunting and have no problem with hunters at all. But this ticked me off. I don't think Meijer's should have caved.

I agree.....they should have raised the money to help
the animals, to heck with complainers.

Don't they know that there will be someone
to complain about everything.
Some people just complain because they are miserable people.

I just emailed a complaint to Meijer. Here it is:
I'm very disappointed to hear about the Grand Rapids, Michigan Humane Society contest being ended because of a Hunter's Assn complaining.
Helping people in a time of need is so important to us as communities. Why would your company punish those people because of a Hunter Assn. complaint??

I'm very surprised that your company would take the stance that it is more important to get "Good PR" than to help people that might lose their homes.

Shame on Maijer.

I encourage anyone that is angry to send in
a complaint too!

I don't understand the benefit of keeping the Humane Society from raising money. Who cares if they are anti-hunting? They still take care of domestic animals that need homes. The humane society in our area took over an entire horse farm that was neglected and found homes for the animals. Who can't support that?

Well, I'm going to play devil's advocate here for a minute.

What if you found out that Meijer was doing the same contest, but the money was going to the National Organization for Women, to help women in foreclosure. NOW is good, right? They help women, fund domestic abuse shelters. But, they are also one of the biggest pro-abortion lobbying groups in the country. Would you support this contest if you knew that some of your money was going to go to paying for pro-choice lobbying? Some would, some wouldn't.

That is the same thing that this hunting group did.

Most of us only see the public side of the Humane Society. We think, oh, the poor animals, they are saving them, how could anyone oppose that? Well, they have another agenda, one that they don't make so obvious. They oppose ALL use of animals. This includes hunting, guard dogs, etc. I had a friend who tried to adopt a Black lab from the Humane society. He was a hunter, but he had no intention of training this dog to hunt. He just wanted a pet. They did a house visit, they saw his rifle, and FLAT OUT REFUSED to allow him to adopt the dog, saying that they suspected he was going to hunt with the dog. He told them, no, I just want a pet. They said too bad. He then went on a "do not adopt" list for them.

Talk about stupidity. Here is someone willing to save the live of an animal, take it out of the shelter and give it a good life, and they say no because he hunts? The Humane society also funds lobbying for anti-hunting legislation, the same way that NOW funds lobbying for pro-choice legislation.

I absolutely support the right of this group to boycott and complain that a contest's proceeds are going to support a group who wants to see their way of life wiped from existence.

Here's the deal.....very simple.....don't donate if you don't
believe in the cause..... But don't create a problem for those
who do want to donate. The hunting group caused others not
to be able to donate.

No, in point of fact they didn't. Anyone can still donate money to the Humane Society to be used for that purpose, just not as part of that contest. What the hunters did was point out that they (as customers of Meijer) were not happy with a contest that the store chose to sponsor. Meijer then made the decision to end the affiliation because a portion of their customer base disapproved. That's the way that a free market society works.
