Bush: Olympic boycott would insult Chinese - CNN.com

Bush has been receiving a lot of flack for his choice to attend the summer olympics in China. I'm not a Bush fan, but I do agree with his reasoning for attending the olympics.

Thoughts?

I personally will be glad when the Olympics are over. I'm tired of hearing about them.

But in regarding President Bush's decision to attend ... I kind of agree. Even when you disagree with a country (China or Iran or anywhere else) I think the importance of keeping communication open is always a good thing.

This is one thing I actually agree with him on... shocker!

I think it's important to be open to communication and be professional and polite. The olympics are a world event, IMO not attending would show disrespect to all other countries competing.

So, if this was in North Korea or Iraq would he still attend (assuming he could be assured of his safety)? I agree that boycotting would send a harsh, and even rude message but does that mean the message shouldn't be sent? I guess when it comes to this I don't really know. It would throw off the lines of communication but at the same time sometimes I wonder if we're still at fault for sitting idly by while China harms some of its own citizens (do a search for the government FORCED abortions this year). I would NOT want a war with them but I also do not agree with their actions. I have to wonder if Bush is just taking the easy way out.

No, Bush should definitely not boycott the summer olympics. China is entitled to run their government any way they want. This nation's government and people as a whole should keep our noses out of other countries business. Chinese government forced abortions are due to citizens breaking the law. Every citizen in China knows that the government limits the number of children to 1. If the Chinese government did not limit the number of children, then that country would be facing widespread starvation. It's the law, abide by it or face the consequences.

If he were to boycott the Olympics, it wouldn't change one thing in China. So he might as well go. I did some reading on the history of the Olympics and the way it was done in ancient Greece is that it was sort of a "time out" for all nations in terms of their animosities towards each other politically. There was a period of truce between all nations for a period of time before, during, and after the events (to allow travel time). So not boycotting sort of holds to the original intent of the games. Aside from that, I don't care either way.
