Dh and I are avid road cyclists so we're watching this pretty close. A lot of motorists don't think we belong on the roads anyway, but I don't think a pedestrian will want us wizzing by at 20+mph.

I think this debate will rear it's head in more and more cities as more and more people start riding bikes.

I don't think sidewalks are the place for bikes. Just install the bike lanes everywhere and institute and enforce the single lane law. We have bike lanes here, but I found out we don't have the law that they can't ride side-by-side. That's where we run into problems with the bikers.

I bike, but I have to say I will not ride on the roads in many areas here because there is just NO shoulder. Side streets, yes, but on the larger roads here there is just no place for a bike. Some areas have bike lanes, but not near us. We ride on a rails to trails trail a there are people walking and they are CONSTANTLY taking up the whole trail, not keeping to the right, not moving to the right when we alert them we are coming (because they have their IPODS in their ear so they can't hear you call or ring). Then they JUMP and freak out when we ride past. Can't win.
