With obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes being such a problem in this country, I think it's a good idea that California is trying to promote better health among it's citizens.

Truthfully, I did not know that California had put a ban on trans fats in restaurants. But I think it is a wonderful idea. They are bad for you and people can not / will not take care of them for themselves. As for the people that say the government should mind its own business regarding what others are choosing to eat - I have to disagree as well. As long as there are people relying on a state funding for health care, then I believe the state should be allowed a bit of a saying regarding what people can eat. Maybe this will help save some lives.

NO I don't agree with it. If I want to eat it, its MY choice. I think they should educate people on good nutrition, rather than police our choices. What's next, will they come check my cabinets to makes sure I'm not stocking my shelves with trans fats?

Yes I do. Now I wish they would put a ban on using Hydragenated Oils too! We have been staying away from them for at least 11 years now!

While I think it is interesting, I'm not sure if I agree with it 100%. Fast food places and chain restaurants that will not be able to use trans fats will just start using oils that are very high in staurated fats instead, it's not like they will use canola or olive oil . People who frequently eat at junky food places will continue to, trans fats or not, it's a personal choice. It's already been proven that people do not pay attention to the calorie listings in some cities at fast food places, so why would they care about trans fats.

You would think I would be thrilled to have a ban since we do not normally eat at fast food or chain restaurants, but I don't think it will really affect me. We already choose to not eat at trans fat laden restaurants.

I do think it would be effective if the state gave establishments a choice. If the restaurant chooses to go trans fat free (and maybe corn syrup free) and use healthy oils instead, it can be given a certain rating or label that could be displayed for patrons to see. It would be very helpful to us, we would only frequent establishments that carried that rating. I do not know if a ban is the best idea, but I wold love to see some regulation and recognition for places that are making an effort.

It's better than nothing! Since we tax payers and our government are paying for all these health problems I say that gives them the right to try to promote healthy eating.

I also like liamsmom's idea of ratings.
