kstp.com - Baby safe after being rescued in stolen SUV

ok why would you leave a baby in the car when you go in to pay (I know its a pain but Id rather it be a pain than have somthing happen to my baby ~I dont even leave my older kids in the car its Just not worth it.

Okay, I am the bad mom! I have always left my kids in the car. I do lock the door and I never leave the keys in it. I have always lived in small towns too if that makes any difference. No way was I going to drag 3 babies out of the car to pay for my gas!!!

How many stories like this do we have to read before people realize that it's JUST.NOT.SAFE. Children are infinitely more valuable than vehicles; why leave them unattended, even for a second?

Does nowhere in your town have pay at the pump? Do you never go out without the kids? Could your DH gas up for you?

I have to say, if I had three kids, I'd do whatever possible to have to take them into a gas station, so I understand where you're coming from, but I'd still not leave them in the car, locked or not, keys in it or not. What do you do when it's very hot or very cold?

I never left my kids alone in the car. If there wasn't pay at the pump, I'd take both the baby and the toddler in with me. Yes, it was a pain, but my kids mean everything to me and there's no way I could live with myself if something crazy like this story happened. Now that the kids are older,(9 and 7), it's much easier to go into the store with them to pay.

Now my kids are older. But when they were little (I had more then 3, just 3 were babies at once) I left them. I don't feel guilty, I could always see the car, and everyone in town knew me. They were never in the car for more than a few minutes so it is not like they would get too hot or too cold. I do not pay at the pump since I do not use credit cards. Luckily, all my kids have surrvived my awful mothering LOL!

I don't see a problem with parents with little kids leaving them in a locked car for 30 seconds to run in and pay for gas. I think the pay at the pump is a great concept, and I use it all the time. But I've also had several times when I've used it and then an error comes up telling me I have to pay inside. If I had 3 little ones in carseats, no way would I unbuckle them and then try walking/carrying them across the lanes with the vehicles going in/out to just pay. If you leave the door unlocked or the keys in the car, you're asking for your car to be stolen. If you have the keys with you, I don't think that car is likely to go anywhere in the minutes you are paying for your gas.

I would never leave my baby in the car alone! Weather the doors were locked or not. What if the baby spit up or threw up and started choking on it? 30 seconds to run in a store may not seem like a long time but it's still to long to leave a baby unattended in a vehicle. JMO
