My DH's two uncles enlisted right out of high school and both went very far in the Air Force, as high as they could without a college degree, which is pretty far. So a good career can be made.
My father dropped out of high school to join the Navy in WWII. When he returned, the principal gave him his his diploma because as far as he was concerned, Dad had earned it.

He later went on the join the Air Force and earned his college degree while in the military. He retired after 20 years of service and entered the private sector. When he retired he had been the executive in charge of health, safety, and environmental issues for several years.

Again it just chaps me that Palin has had this micro-examination of every aspect of her life that none of others on the ticket have had to undergo. So much for women's rights. This super biased treatment of Palin has convinced me that feminism as defined by liberals is huge crock. They say she's going to drag women back to the stone ages? As far as I can tell the only real criticism they have of her is that she's not a liberal. So, the only genuine feminists are liberals, if I'm to correctly understand why Palin has been treated the way she has.
In my opinion, it wouldn't have happened this way if McCain had chosen a woman who does not come off like an under-educated idiot who only can pop off memorized lines from her cheat-sheet, who pulls off a smarmy "hockey-mom/every woman" persona which strikes me as condescending to the average person, and who is what I consider to be a right wing religious and political zealot. Elizabeth Dole is conservative and I consider the work she has done to be an excellent example of feminism. Same with any number of republican women in office. But Palin doesn't hold a candle to her, in my opinion. Again - did I say MY opinion enough? SO, I get to act by not voting for her. Anyone who thinks she is the cat's meow can go ahead and vote for her.

Elizabeth Dole would have been treated to the same degree of insulting personal inspection, imo. It's become clear to me this election cycle that no conservative woman running for high office can expect to be treated with any degree of decency by the liberal press or her opponents. What woman in her right mind would want to run for high office on a conservative ticket after seeing how Palin has been trashed?

I don't think Palin is the cat's meow. And I'm not a big McCain fan either. But I do admit to having an even lower opinion of liberal feminism and mainstream media. I didn't think that was possible before this year.

Like you said, you voice your opinion in the voting booth, as do I. And that's the way it should be.

I am the fartherest from a Hillary Clinton fan as you can find but even I felt sorry for her at how she was treated during her campaign. Especially once it became obvious that the media wanted Obama to get the Democratic nod. They went after her like I've never seen any man running for office gone after. So I think regardless of what woman decides to run for many years to come, this is the exact type of treatment they will receive. And either side will pick what they want to harp on, as has been done with Palin.

My husband enlisted right after high school and he has an "amazing" career in the military AND a college education that the Army paid for. He is one of the most intelligent people I know and is highly respected by his soldiers.

I almost feel sorry for Palin. McCain has thrown her into a situation she is clearly not ready for, hence all the cuteness she tries to throw out there. I want a President/VP who is actually smarter than I am...someone who has been somewhere besides her home state (and being able to see Russia from her state doesn't count!). I don't want someone I see on Sat at my kids soccer games, she is in over her head and unfortunately she will probably end up being a punchline is many jokes to come!

If I say I don't like Palin, people think it is because I am liberal. I'm not, I'm pretty conservative. For me it is about her stance on a few issues that I don't want to get into here. I just also find it condescending to try to pander to "Hockey Moms". Sadly, she wouldn't be doing it if didn't work. Most people have no idea where the candidates stand on the issues. Obama's for change, McCain is a Maverick. Whatever.

Especially with the bold part. The media has a HUGE love affair going on with Obama. It was so funny how the Clintons were always the fair haired children until the liberal media decided they wanted Obama and then they threw the Clintons overboard. I don't blame Bill for still having a burr in his pants.
