has anyone ever sold an item on ebay to someone that lives outside the us?
how do you know what shipping charges to use and is there customs problems?

From what I have heard its very easy to ship outside the us. I havn't done it, the furtherst I've shipped to is Canada. You can go the the USPS website to figure postage, as long as you have the weight of the package. There are customs forms at the PO that are very easy and quick to fill out. If you need help with it, but sure to ask a postal employee.

I shipped something to spain the other day and it was very easy. You just have to fill out a customs form, it just asks what are the contents, dollar value, and both the sender and receivers address. Just be sure the person knows that shipping is different. I had a gentleman think $20 to ship to Spain was in excess and I told him that he knew how much it was before he bidded and I had actually taken the pkg to the post office to get an accurate rate!

I ship out of the country a lot, the postal service has a shipping calculator on their web site to help you know what it will cost, or you can take it to have it weighed at the post office, and they can tell you how much will cost.

1/4 of all my ebay sales are to international buyers. They are actually very good buyers and have given me a lot of business.

I sell mostly kids clothing. I send it first class if possible but I let the buyer know that it can take a few weeks to arrive depending on where they live.

If they buy a few items from me, I can usually stuff it in a flat rate priority envelope and send it for a flat rate. It cost $9 to send to Canada and $12 everywhere else. Its a good deal if you are buying 2 or 3 things and having it sent Priority half way around the world.

I also print my postage off of stamps.com. You do not have to wait in lines at the post office. The customs form is on the shipping label that you just print. SO easy. It also gives you a discount on Priority and International orders.

If it is a high dollar item you are selling and the buyer doesnt have a lot of feedback or doesnt have good feedback then I require that I send it Priority Or Express Global that is not the flat rate. That way I can get a tracking number.
