Do you have more success if you start your auctions really low? I've tried a couple of things at 0.99 sometimes they go higher than my expectations but some have sold for 0.99 and that really bums me out! What are your thoughts about what price to start auctions?

I have had pretty good luck starting things out at 99 cents. But, when you do, you have to be prepared to let it go. If it is something you don't want to part with for less than $1, then don't do it. Once you pay your listing fee and final value fee, you end up with very little. I usually make up for it with my shipping costs though. I do add a handling fee in my shipping but it is not so much that people won't buy. For more expensive items, you can always use a reserve price.

I only start stuff out that cheap if I really want to get rid of it. Sometimes you get a bonus and the bidding goes up quite a bit. Everything else I put the minimum of what I paid for it or what it may now be worth. I gotta say auctions have not been so hot for me of late.

Like you, I tried starting my auctions at 99 cents, but with about the same results. Some sold for more, but others didn't, and that was disappointing. I posted this same question on an eBay forum once, and some "senior sellers" noted that I should raise my starting bids because I am not a big seller on eBay (just occasionally, when I'm purging closets!), and that a low opening price might scare off buyers who are wary. Not all buyers know me as a seller. And, despite my great feedback rating, they might be suspicious as to why an item is priced so low.

The low opening bid strategy backfired for me. I agree that if you are going to price something very low, you should be willing to let it go for that price with no regrets.

I have over 1000 feedback and have been selling for quite a while. I used to start every auction at .99 a couple of years ago because they mostly all sold at good prices. Now with ebay being slow and crazy I do mostly fixed price listings. Those seem to do the best for me and I love them!

I start most of my items at $.99. It does depend though. If I think it won't sell as well, I bump it a little higher. Another attention grabber is free shipping. I might start my auction at $9.99 when an item ships for like $6-$7
This also will get more bids if an item did not sell the first time or something.

I have been selling full-time on eBay for 5 years and it is not like it used to be. I used to start almost everything at 99 cents but now things end way too cheap to do that. I will only start something at 99 cents that I KNOW will sell for a LOT..like several hundred dollars. Like you could start a Wii Fit at 99 cents for example. Otherwise I start at the lowest I'm willing to take now. Good luck!

After listing my dd's school uniforms three times at a buy it now price with no bids, I listed them for $5 starting price. I got $5.50 for 2 sets and $7 for the other. It was dissapointing since I paid $160 for them and they were new without tags.

I tried Craiglist for a few weeks so I decided to unload them on ebay. I guess I should be happy they sold.

Unfortunately, after I sold them for next to nothing, I realized I should've taken them to the consignment shop.
