It's hot here in Phoenix, but this will work anywhere.
Police work long hours and are often out directing traffic in the hot sun with their dark uniforms. If you can do it without blocking traffic, offer them a cold bottle of water - I always have some in my car. They are truly appreciative - they can tell the bottles are new and sealed when they open them.
I've done the same to guys working in my yard and across the street.
