My co-worker is a volunteer in the NICU at our local childrens hospital. He just holds the babies. My co-worker is hoping to become a pediatrian. He is still in college. Great for college age group.

As evident from one of our own mommysavers, parents can't always stay at the hospital and staffing is tight.

edited: tried to edit title to say babies instead of newborns but can't change.

**Edited by margieboz_n_boyz to fix the title for you

I did this when I was in college and loved every minute of it. Spending a couple of hours in the nursery was actually a relaxing experience. Granted there were some sad stories, but overall a good experience.

When I worked in a city hosp on the Trauma Flight Crew I used to volunteer on the NICU to hold babies that were born with special needs, and those who were born to addicts and alcoholics - it was a great stress reducer for me. I enjoyed working with those babies so much about 6 yrs ago I made a career change. I now care for those special needs babies in the community once they are discharged to live at home.
