I don't think everyone will be sending videos back because they didn't "like" them. It's not just about that if it's about that at all. While I don't expect the videos on their own to make my children smarter, I do like to select videos that can benefit them in some ways when viewed with me or another adult and used to promote interaction.
I know I'm sending back the ones I knew weren't quality Baby E videos and had no functional purpose. You can definitely tell a big difference with some of the videos. Some were just plain "brain candy" as I call it. I would have returned them long ago after my first viewing of them, however, there was no option to do so due to stores not allowing returns on opened media.
My children and I have used some of the videos as educational aids when we were working on some basic concepts and sign language. There's a lot of good supplemental material in the 'additional" sections of the videos that we used more than the actual feature titles.
I'm not surprised that Disney is doing this since there is more information and research coming out about the effects of TV watching and infants. Also, since Baby E videos were one of (if not the) the first of their kind and most popular, many research/studies have been done on them. I wouldn't be surprised if there are newer studies showing a direct impact on children watching them. Maybe Disney is being strategic and trying to avoid further legal action (if that's ever possible). Disney has not stated in this settlement that the videos ever meant to increase intelligence, so actually this offer is set up to be more like a "satisfaction guaranteed" situation (that makes Disney look better without having to deal with acquisations that this is admitting that the videos were advertised to make babies smarter....
If you look at most of the videos that fall within the purchase "timeline" and qualify for a "refund/upgrade," they are the ones that have specific age suggestions on them and descriptions on how children can benefit from watching them and referred to as digital board "books." It's all really in the wording, so as any company would do, they want to "fix" this fast and easy. I bet the next release of these videos will have big disclaimers on them stating the exact opposite and/or recommending the videos for children over 2including specific instructions like "view and interact with your child". Sad that some people would need that (reminds me of the bumbo recall..sigh).
You're not "stirring the pot" by sharing your opinion, but might do so by judging others for deciding to return/exchange their videos. If you are entitled to your own opinion and actions, so is everyone else.
You haven't ever returned something you weren't satisfied with?
