My ds wants an ipod for Christmas but I've noticed there are cheaper mp3's out there (Sandisc is one brand) Does it matter which brand? What's the difference? He thought that you can download tunes from the website only if you get the actual ipod, but not with the other brands. Anybody have advice? TIA

I do believe that music downloaded from iTunes will only play on iPods (or recently some versions of Motorola's RAZR started shipping with iTunes, but it says that very plainly).

I tried to look it up to confirm, but I couldn't find it stated so bluntly anywhere. I know it has been the case that itunes only works for ipods but there is a chance my information is outdated.

Kids just want iPods, it's the trendy thing to get, anything else just isn't the same

I don't know much about ipods but I do know that there are other sites to download music from so I wouldn't use that as a reason. You can even buy songs from Wal-Mart to download to your MP3 player. I have just a small cheap one and I love it for the gym. I agree with Grey that it's the name brand they're wanting but any MP3 player will pretty much do the same thing.

The disadvantage of an ipod is that there are only 2 sites you can download from, itunes and emusic. My DH is getting a Creative brand one because they also made the sound card in our computer, so compatibility is not an issue. We subscribe to Napster and if you upgrade to the $14.95/mo deal you can download as many songs as you want as long as they go onto an mp3 player, where as if you burn to cd, it's $.99 a song, so you save a lot of money. DH is getting a 2 gigabyte one that will hold close to 500 songs, depending on song length. We vetoed the ipod simply because Napster is something we already subscribe too and its cheaper than itunes and emusic as well as having a bigger library of music.

I thought napster was "renting" the music. sorry, I'm pretty unknowledgable about this stuff.

On Napster we pay $9.95 a month and that allows us to stream music to listen to just like picking cds to put in your player, but if you want to burn cds of the music it costs $.99 a song or they will do the whole cd for $9.95 to $19.95 depending on length (it's usually cheaper that buying in the store). But for an upgraded membership you can download as many songs in mp3 format as your player will hold.

and love them~! My niece bought a san disk and took it back. I'd definitely go with Creative though. A great place for cheap music is allofmp3.com but it's payment options is now very limited with the music industry trying to shut them down. They are out of Russia and follow Russian law.
