I don't know if this is the right place for this, so please move it accordingly if needed.

After Christmas, Target changed it's return policy to (2) items at a time on the same return without receipt. And only (2) return visits a year. Before it was (3) visits and unlimited? number of items. Plus, the return credit is the last sale price, even if the item is back to full price at the time of your return. The return credit must be used the same day and in the same department (housewares, etc.). I even witnessed someone yesterday who was returning a $75+ baby item and she was told that she could only choose (1) baby item of the same value. That's how strict the policy is getting for returns without receipt.

Fortunately, Target does continue to honor (90) days return with receipt (and I've even missed a couple of days, been told by the clerk that they can't accept it, ask them to try to scan it and have it go through). I keep all my receipts organized by expiry date and constantly check them if there's any that I need to return before that date.

Plus, they can check your credit card for past purchases, but know that they take the last date of purchase and/or the lowest price paid. Now when I buy clearance, I use different credit cards for the % off (100%, 50%, 75%, etc.) and use gift cards or cash for the 90% I know I don't want to return.

As long as I can remember return credit has always been the lowest price (sale or clearance) and that's pretty standard for returns without a recipet at any store. I think most stores are making their return policies a lot more strict and for good reason. I used to work at Toys'r'Us and you wouldn't believe some of the stuff we took back. It's one of the reasons, though, that I am cautious what toys I buy on clearance for other children. I also usually make sure to get a gift receipt whenever possible if I am buying a gift for someone (assuming that I'm giving the gift within the 90 day return window) - that way if they need to return it, they get back the price I paid for it. And in the long run, stricter return policies should eventually add up to lower prices on merchandise - which is good for everyone.

It sounds quite reasonable to me! I think that to many people try to take advantage of the stores, they have to protect themselves. Personally,I rarely return anything and never without a receipt.

I was kind of surprised at one of Targets policies. I bought two pairs of shoes for my son at full price. I was shopping at Target less than a week later and noticed the shoes went on clearance. I asked for a price adjustment and they said that they don't give price adjustments on items that go on clearance, even if it is less than a week since the original purchase. This just doesn't seem right to me.

Target can be pretty strict so I always use my credit card just in case I loose my receipt.

On the other hand, ToysRus doesn't care what the situation is, they will not accept a return or exchange without a receipt or gift receipt. MIL bought ds a toy from there for Christmas, paid cash and then had her purse stolen (w/the receipt inside). The toy was a made for ToysRus toy and they still wouldn't let me exchange it for something he didn't have!!! I couldn't beleive it! I even called corprate and they said the store mgr had no wiggle room in the policy. I told them that although I understood the policy (I did my time in retail also) it should be written to give mgrs some room to use their judgement!

Isn't it a shame what dishonest people are putting us through?

Hmmm...that's interesting. When I worked at TRU their return policy used to have so many holes you could drive a mack truck through it...and the managers had TOO MUCH wiggle room. They were constantly approving returns for things they had no business taking back (imagine a remote control car with no receipt and no box that looked like it had been run over by a truck - returned for cash...a return that was approved by the store director ). I'm sure that has something to do with the changes to their policy.

Targets EXCHANGE policy is strict too. My daughter got some shoes/outfits from there for her birthday and I just wanted to get bigger sizes and I was only allowed to do 2 items. I went through the dept and saw what they had in the size and wanted and decided from there but what a hassle!
