My dh and I have had Direct Tv for several years now, even before we knew each other. We've never really had any problems in the past except for when lightning hit one of the receivers and fried it, but that wasn't anyone's fault. Well, about three months ago, half of the channels stopped working. A month after this happened, the channels flip flopped; the channels that worked before stopped working and the ones that didn't work started working. About two weeks ago, all of the channels stopped working. We have been calling the customer service people trying to get this fixed since the first time the channels went out. Now normally I don't have a problem paying for the technican calls for certain things, paying for a new receiver, etc., but this time it felt like it was a ploy to get someone out to fix the receiver seeing that all the Direct Tv symbols were coming up on the tv, but none of the programs would come through. I don't think it was fair for us to be paying for service on both tvs and not getting what we pay for, especially since we can get basic cable at a less expensive rate. I pay the extra because I like the features and usually the customer service is superb. I felt like I was being taken advantage of and I refused to pay for someone to come out and fix the "problem" when it obviously isn't the receiver. I explained and complained to the service people for an hour and a half, and finally they agreed to send someone out to replace or fix the receiver that we have.

I guess to make a long story as short as possible, has anyone else had problems with their tv providers such as Direct tv, comcast, basic cable, etc? Would you have done the same thing and tried to get them to fix it at no charge?

I don't have a dish, but w/cable, I would indeed expect them to fix it. What's frustrating is that they are now selling this bogus package like the phone company does where they have you pay for inside wire maintenance, and then blame every problem on your inside wires. Speak with an electrician. It's VERY rare inside wires are to blame. Qwest has tried this trick on me many times, which is one of the many reasons I'm planning on dropping them for my phone.

I would have expected the same thing from Direct TV, I also have Direct TV and while customer service is friendly, but not very helpful, at least once a day I cant get anymore than 5 channels so I have to completely shut off everything and then turn back on & wait for signal this usually happens about 4 times a day, customer service said this is not normal but they can't really figure out why this is doing this & may require a service call?
Also every time it rains ( even a little) or snows my direct tv can lose it signal sometimes for up to 24 hours, they suggested I move my dish, somehow I just can't imagine myself climbing on top of my house (where direct tv installed it) & moving it, plus where would I put it?? I live in a rural area so my options are pretty limited so for now I quess I am stuck.

I agree that I would expect them to come and fix things ~ especially since it sounds like their issue totally.

We have had good luck with DirecTv (knock on wood). We just to have trouble with sun outages, or with the weather, but since we switched to our new dish (a oval 3 dealie-bobber thing ) and the high-def receiver we haven't had any issuses - rain, snow, clouds, wind...nothing.) I was even impressed that during some strong storms last year, when we had tornado warnings it stayed on. Their customer service kinda ticks me off , but I usually end up getting what I want. Also their technicians are really grumpy!!

We have Direct TV also and it has really given us some problems in the last 2 weeks. We have not been able to get any local channels and every time we turn on the TV it gives us this searching for..... message. Do you think we need a new card or that we need someone to have a look at the dish? Very frustrating this morning because we were trying to find out about school closings.

This is kind of the same thing that happened to one of our previous receivers and they sent us a new receiver completely. I can't remember if we had to pay for it or not b/c it might have occurred within the first 90 of installation.

They tried to sell me on some plan that costs $5.95 a month that allows you to have unlimited technician calls...CATCH! Each service call costs $14.00! Thankfully, we've only had to have a technician come out one other time in the five or so years we've had their service. It cost us $70.00 then. So, I guess it's a better deal just to bite the bullet and pay the $70.00 for the one service call that happens on vary rare occassions because if you had the yearly plan you would be paying $71.40 a year + the $14.00 per service call, a minimum of $85.40 a year. But, if you have to have them out every other week, the "insurance" might be best.

I do like Direct TV's features, as far as the number of channels, interactive channels, and tv guide. We get every channel except the movie channels (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, etc.), our telephone, and our highspeed internet connection for a little over $100.00 a month. It's one of the things that I splurge on b/c I hate dialup. I haven't checked into the cable prices so I don't know how they compare.

Oh, just a little update also. The customer service rep told me that a technician would be at my house between 8:30 and noon, like that isn't a huge time span already...well, it's now 1:16 and NOTHING!!
