We are wanting to get an air purifier. There are so many different ones, we don't know where to start. I want it for my living room, which isn't really big at all. I guess I would like to know if the cheap ones work as well as the more expensive ones. The ones I've seen on QVC look like they work really well, but they are the only ones I've ever seen being used. Does anyone have any recommendations? Do you have one you love?

Before buying, check Consumer Reports if you can, and do some googling. I also type what I'm looking for and read thru reviews. The Sharper Image ones, the Ionic ones, are always thumbs down for Consumer Reports. I have an expensive one that is no longer available, and in truth, it just got too expensive to run, changing the filters every 3 months and all, and I really don't know if it helped. Don't go Oreck. Bad to do business with.

Mine is Honeywell, known for being good, and before I got it, there were great reviews, then afterward, so-so. Don't know if I could win!

Ditto. We were thinking about getting one, to see if it helped my allergies at all. After Googling and reading the CR reviews, we've decided not to buy one, at least for now. I didn't know it before, but the ionizing ones put ozone into the air, which tends to make allergies (and asthma, I think? it's been a while) worse. That, plus the replacement cost of the filters, was a heavy argument against.

However, when we replace our vacuum, we will be getting one that has a HEPA filter or is bagless. Anything to improve our current one that seems to leave a trail of dust in the air behind it.

Thanks ladies! I'll do some more research before I decide.

A warning on the bagless vacuum: I just went to one and don't plan to keep it. I really dislike it - it's neat (or disgusting) to see what you're picking up, but the emptying part is terrible. The dust starts the minute you unlock the container. Dust is actually ALL AROUND the container and the dust is in the air. They need to come up with a way that is totally locking in the dust until you open it inside a plastic bag. Then, when I dump it, even with a closed plastic trash bag, it still is a little in the air when I open it. And there's still dust inside the container to be cleaned. I am going back to a simple bag w/Hepa on it.
