This looks REALLY fun. You put the cream/flavoring in one side and lock it and the ice & salt in the opposite side and lock it, then roll or pass it around & shake to make the ice cream.. the reviews are pretty good too. Here's a link with more info: Ice Cream Ball - Amazon.com

That's cute. I've never tried it, never seen it 'til now, but sounds pretty much like making 'baggie ice cream', so it should work similarly I'd think.

On the Food Network there was a show called Ham on the Street with George Duran. He had an ice cream episode. I first seen those balls on that show. He tested to see who could made better ice cream Soccer players or garbage men. The ball was kicked around by the players and the garbage men had there ice cream double bagged with some ice in it. They just tossed theirs around. It ball made good ice cream.
I just noticed them in a magazine a few weeks ago. I thought it was just a product thought up by the food network for that show. I think it looks like a fun way to get the kids involved.

I first saw them in L.L. Bean catalog (or was it Eddie Bauer?) last year. A couple of months ago I found one at Walmart and bought it. The kids have had a lot of fun. We've just made the basic vanilla (the only ingredients we used were cream (we used half & half), sugar and vanilla. You also use rock salt & ice. The only problem is that it makes only a pint. I think Eddie Bauer has both the pint & the quart.

My brother bought a couple when we went camping last year - after a very long time of shaking, rolling and kicking it around, it never did make ice cream - more like melted ice cream -- it didnt become hard or even close to a soft ice cream. Basically, it didnt work. Quite dissapointing for the price he paid - I think he got his from EAI, the camping/outdoor store/catalog.

My grandparents have one. I haven't used it but they have with a few great grandkids. I know they had so much fun with it but they said you need 4 or 5 people because it gets tiring. Though this is the suggestion of 2 78 year olds and 3 kids between 6-10.
