Both of my kids had slept in a top bunk around the age of 5 or 6. The top bunk had a rail that was tall enough to keep them from rolling out and I had no concerns.

I totally agree with Oregano. I don't think that they were intended for 2-3 yo's, but there are some that are younger than 6 that would do OK. My oldest was 4 when she got hers, but you have to know her....she is like the uber rule follower. She only went up at bedtime, and didn't play around. Now my 2nd is 6 and there is very little way I would feel comfortable with her in the top bunk. I just know she would find some way to "tarzan" outta the thing
