To find out what's lurking on your shelves, go to the National Institutes of Health Library of Medicine Household Products Database. You can search almost any brand of cleaner you use, find out what's in it, and uncover its links to health effects. Or search by chemical ingredients (see list below for some examples) and discover what brands contain it.

Chemical ingredients to look out for:

* Sodium Hydroxide
* Hydrochloric acid
* Butyl cellosolve (2-Butoxyethanol)
* Formaldehyde
* Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
* Ammonia
* Sulfamic Acid
* Petroleum distillates
* Sulfuric acid
* Lye (potassium hydroxide)
* Morpholine

It's funny because I got the same type of list...just a few different items on it. the #1 bad thing to use in your house (on the list I got) was a gas stove, because everytime it's used, your home has an "unhealthy air quality" as they put it! I have wanted to get a gas stove for a while, but after reading this article I searched around and found more info on it, I don't want a gas stove anymore!

I am surprised that the following items are on this list...

Ultra Brite Toothpaste
Cepacol Mouthwash
Crest Tartar Control
Listerine Original & Cool Mint
Arm & Hammer Toothpaste
Colgate toothpaste
Scope Mouthwash

anyone who buys them, obviously does so with intentions of putting them into their mouths...kind of crazy. I want to do some research when I have time to see just how accurate these lists actually are...It could just be the "competitor companies" of these products posting these lists just so people stop buying the competitors brand. I do believe that happens a lot! It happened to Proctor & Gamble about two years ago. There was some AWEFUL rumor spread about the company and the other "competitor" companies really benifited from it.

According to my dental hygienist, we should not use any mouthwash that has alcohol in it (which most do - you have to look). Not only is it drying, which contributes to cavities, but it contributes to ORAL CANCER! I had no idea....yet, they stay on the market.

I know this is crazy! As far as gas stoves go, I'd be lost without mine but I'm always sure to turn my exaust fan on when I use it.
