A lot of time refurbished items are simply items that have been opened and returned, or where the box was damaged in a warehouse, or overstock, or and older, replaced model. I wouldn't shy away from them, as long as they had a warranty, as long as the brand was a good brand. I would think twice about doing it on a fridge or dishwasher, unless you had the true history available, but on a small appliance, I wouldn't worry too much. It's often one, also that has been scratched and repainted - not perfect, but almost. You can ask questions and be sure to ask about the return policy. If there seem to be a LOT of refurbs of a certain type, be a little leery - it could be that it was quicky upgraded/revamped, so this is leftover stock, or that it was not a good one, or had a lot of returns. It's hard to get the answers, but you can ask Kitchen-Aid directly.
