We have a 2004 Honda CRV, bought new. I have 22,000 miles on it - very low mileage, as it's my errand, drive to school car, and family car on the weekends and WE NEVER GO ANYWHERE!!
Anyway, the tires needed replacing at 20K! That is so crazy! DH was going to go ahead and replace them, which is expensive. So we went to Firestone, who makes the tires. First place said no warranty. I told him to call Honda on it - they chose the tires, and most come with a 60Kmile warranty. First guy at Honda tried to tell him no warranty, but he'd cut him a deal, so we would only end up paying around $400 to do all new tires. Gee thanks.
We contacted Firestone directly. They said there is a warranty, and gave us a location who would prorate the tires and we could get new. So, we contacted the place. It would still cost us around $250. Getting better. Started calling around again. Went to another Firestone dealer.
Bottom line, is we found out these tires are inferior. There is a warranty, indeed. So...we used the prorated warranty, replaced all 4 tires, and with all that, chose a better quality Firestone tire, better rating, etc., smoother, quieter ride (hated the old ride) and paid.....$85.12 to replace all 4!!!
So...check your tires. If they are worn before their time (be sure to rotate every 7500 miles...Honda tried to tell us we didn't do it, but it was in their records we did...Firestone tried to tell us we didn't, then the last Firestone location noted that the uneven wear happened in only the last 5K miles, so the rotation or no rotation played no part anyway), fight it out and shop around.
Hope this little story saves YOU money, and for safety reasons, hassle and health!
