I sold a ring there once at Pawn America. I did not know what to expect either. He asked me what price I was looking for and I was stupid and said I did not know. So I think he gave me a price much lower then what it was worth. If you do go, check the internet to see what the jewelry is going for and then you will be educated to see if it is worth it or not when they offer you the money.

I work at a Pawn Shop. When you sell jewelry to a pawn shop, we take into account what kind of stones the jewelry has. If they arent quality diamonds you will not get much for it. Basically what the jewelry is worth in Gold bc it will more than likely be scrapped. Most jewelry that comes in our shops is not even worth half of what a jewelry store has charged. A lot of diamonds are lab grown, meaning they are not going to be clear, the color mostly horrible.I do not agree with checking the internet to see what it is ging for. You stones if any, will not be the same clarity and quality of what may be advertised on the net. I do not work for a pawn chain, I work for my Stepdad who has been in the business for over 20 yrs.

When the pawnbroker asked what you were looking for price wise- Some people come in with something worth $20 brand new and expect to get $19 for it. Also, at a pawn shop you can sell it to them, he/she may not have been aware you were going to sell them the item. When people pawn stuff we ask them prior what kind of money they are expecting to get. Pawn shops generally want the interest money not the product a person is pawning. They are then stuck with it and have to put up with the headache of trying to sell it.

I've sold damaged or broken jewelry items to a pawn shop. Like the other person said, the pawn shop turns around and scraps the gold. I got more at a pawn shop than I would have selling it to a jeweler.

Thanks for the advice. I have several gold chains, etc that I just don't wear anymore, so I thought about getting some cash for them. I don't have any diamonds or stones to sell.

I recently talked to this guy who sells for people on ebay, people like me who don't have a clue about how to do it and don't want the hassle.

He said that gold is doing very good as scrap on ebay, and encouraged me to drop off any I want to sell on it. May be a better outlet for you than the pawn shops.

I've dealt alot with Pawn Shops in my area, and the one I usually go to will WEIGH the gold and pay you accordingly. I had several gold chains that were broken that I took in once. Didn't get much for them, because they weighed very little.

I'd say, if you have anything that you feel is really WORTH something, have it appraised by a jewler...or two...before heading to the Pawn Shop. Especially if you're looking to SELL and not PAWN. Those of us, like me, who have no clue about what the value of gold is (it changes all the time), or other gems, would do good to at least have some handle on the value of an item before you let it go.

If it's gold to be scrapped you'll get an OK deal at a pawn shop. They'll purchase gold based on weight, regardless of condition. If it has gem stones, the only ones they'll count are the diamonds, and as mentioned above, they have a formula for thier worth based on thier quality and size. If it's in good shape, you'll most likely get more on e-bay as tose that purchase it will most likely purchase it based on actually wanting to wear or gift the item as opposed to the scrap value. Especially if it has real emralds or rubies as they have high value, but you can't test to see if they're real so a pawn shop won't take that into consideration.
