As I've posted previously, I work part-time as a teleservices operator. One of the product lines we represent is a chain restaurant that does food deliveries (people call in, place their order with us and we transmit it to the restaurant for delivery). During these calls I have access to all the coupons and specials that are being offered. You know what? There really are 'ask for it only' specials. Even if the caller asks me, "What other deals do you have?" I can't suggest some of the discounts because the caller has to ask for it.
Unfortunately, there is no way around this EXCEPT to pay attention when you see advertisements, etc. Store clerks and restaurant personnel can't automatically give you a discount unless you have a coupon or you ask for it. I hate having people order with me while I know if they changed just one little part of their order they would receive over 50% off AND I CAN'T SAY ANYTHING. Sometimes, especially if they have already told me they are tight on money, I'll hint strongly that they might want to try their item a different way but some don't pick up on that.
Anyway, that's my advice - keep your head up and ears open while shopping this holiday season. We all could stretch our dollars just a little farther that way.
