I (my bathroom) have a major odor problem. There was nothing in the stores that I could think of that would work on something this bad so I ordered something online. I hate doing that but I am DESPERATE! Before I go into the story behind the odor I just wanted to let everyone know that I will let them know if this product is a winner or loser in about a week!

Odor Story:

You know how you tell kids to do things for a good reason but it sometimes doesn't sink in well this is one of those times for me.

I have told my three older kids that when they flush the toilet to stick around for 2 SECONDS and make sure everything goes down. Well....the other day dd didn't do that and by the time we realize that the toilet was over flowing the whole bathroom floor (carpeted) was flooded and was running into the downstairs bathroom and some in garage! My husband sucked up as much as he could with the wet/dry vac but it was still wet. Now, 2 days later, it is is much drier but has a really bad odor. SHOOT ME! This is not our house is a rental and nice one. We have a good landlord and I don't want to screw things up here. We have only been in this house 2 1/2 months!

This cleaner I bought off of the internet is called SCOE 10X. It was expensive but I figured I would give a try before resorting to replacing the carpet. I really don't want to have to call my nice landlord and tell him that the bathroom carpet is ruined, which by the way matches the kitchen, livingroom and hallway!

Please tell me what you think, anything!

Have you considered steam cleaning the carpet in the bathroom? It may help.

I'm just wondering why people would put Carpet in the bathroom in the first place.

I've never heard of the product, but the first thing I'd do is suggested above: steam cleaning. Rent one of those machines or have someone come in (more expensive, but more thorough). Even if all you do doesn't work, usually it's the pad that holds the smell. So rather than replace the whole carpet, you may get away with just replacing the pad. Good luck!

And I agree about the carpeting...I'll stick with tile in the bathrooms, laundry room and kitchen, with nice, quality area rugs. Ick!

And maybe the landlord needs to see why the toilet is having issues; do you have a partial blockage somewhere?

if cleaning it doesn't work, i would talk to the landlord. maybe peek under the carpet; is the tile tolerable looking? i know you're not looking forward to any expense, but maybe retiling the bathroom wouldn't be so bad? maybe you can do it yourself and split the price w/ the landlord.

i agree with everyone else that carpet in the bathroom wasn't a bright idea....

Yikes...well it might be mold or something like that growing underneath that even steam cleaning won't get out, since the pad is likely soaked. I would worry about bacteria and what not growing due to the toilet water (if I'm understanding you correctly) because it wasn't clean water. You might very well have to have it ripped out, unfortunately. Maybe call some carpet cleaning companies and ask for suggestions. You really want just dry extraction, if you use a rental unit, the problem is, is that they deposit more water onto already soaked carpet.

Thanks for all of the feedback! I am still in a real funk about this but at least now I have some good ideas.

I do agree with all of you that carpet in a bathroom is a really stupid idea and MPO that goes for a kitchen too. I don't have carpet in my kitchen (Thank goodness!) but I do have in the dining room. I know my landlord has a grown daughter but I am going to assume that he doesn't have any sons or they would have never had carpet in a bathroom.

I just wanted to give all of you the update on the odor eliminator, SCOE 10X, that I ordered for the bathroom problem.

It is expensive, but IT DOES WORK EXTREMELY WELL! It got rid of every last bit of the odor and let me tell you it was bad even after steam cleaning. I am totally sold on this product now!

By the way, a little goes a really long way.
