Readers Digest recently had an article on airbag scams. Due to flaws in reporting when a car is totaled (it is on titles, but a scammer can take a rebuilt car (rebuilt from an accident) to a state that doesn't have tight restrictions and the title can be wiped clean. Therefore, the airbag may have deployed and never replaced. Or junk (literally - one case had papers stuffed in the cavity) put in the place there should be one. Or an aftermarket airbag was installed. Or things aren't hooked up correctly. All airbags should come only from the manufacturer.
Any airbag that has ever deployed MUST be replaced to be fully functional. The charge is easily over $1K, thus the livelihood for the scammers.
If buying used, do your due diligence. If it looks/smells funny, walk away. As the cliche goes, "The life you save may be your own."
