Hold the milk — cereal company issues recall
Area supermarkets are dealing with the latest food recall issued this week by the Malt-O-Meal company.
The firm voluntarily recalled its unsweetened Puffed Rice and unsweetened Puffed Wheat cereals due to potential contamination by salmonella.
The recalled product, with "best if used by" dates ranging from April 8, 2008, to March 18, 2009, was distributed nationally.
It was marketed under the Malt-O-Meal brand and as some private label brands including Acme, America's Choice, Food Club, Giant, Hannaford, Jewel, Laura Lynn, Pathmark, Shaw's, ShopRite, Tops and Weis Quality.
A Malt-O-Meal spokesman said that no illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this cereal and that all other Malt-O-Meal products are unaffected.
Other products are safe for continued sale and consumption, the company said.

The recall was initiated after the Malt-O-Meal's internal routine food safety testing detected the presence of salmonella in a product produced on March 24, 2008.
The company immediately began an investigation to determine the cause as well as the extent of any possible exposure, company spokesmen said.
Initial results from the follow-up investigation indicate that additional products may have been exposed to the contaminant.
Karen Meleta, director of corporate communications for Wakefern Food Corp., which acts as a distributor for ShopRite, said ShopRite has been notifying customers who bought the potentially tainted products with their PricePlus cards.
"Depending on the recall and how urgent it is, we will call those customers and notify them that our records indicate they made a purchase and they should return it to the store," Meleta said.
Persons infected with salmonella may experience a variety of symptoms and illnesses including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in more severe illnesses, some potentially life-threatening.
