well...the kirby's DO give you discounts...i mean...they are about (with discounts) maybe 1400-1600.00. they do it all though...i LOVE them. HOWEVER, i see most folks here have dyson.
i have a pitbull who has SEVERE (and i mean BAD) mange...her skin peels and cracks and when those kirby people came to clean my carpets, they pulled LOADS of her fur and skin out of the carpet (UGH GAG ME!!!) and it smelled SOOOOOO much better in my house.
being that my dog is VERY sick (to the point of we are deciding whether or not we should just put her down because she suffers alot. not the WORST, but ALOT), and the mange stinks, the carpets stink JUST like her! ugh. i hate it so much, to have a perfectly clean house and stink dirty carpets! ewwwwww.
i am leaning towards the dyson pet. i just want to make sure that it can get ALL of the dirt (over time though) out of our carpets.
it's so bad that i am going to go on and sneak and replace the living room carpet when i get my stimulus money from the government. i had wanted it for our small business, but these carpets are making us all (including our pets!!) SICK! i have to get rid of at least SOME of it...in the living room...because that's where the smell is eminating from
i just want to make sure our new carpets don't become a waste by being deadened down with dirt, animal hair, and dead skin
so far, it looks like dyson is what we're gonna buy! i just need that sucker to be SUPER strong!
does anyone know about the warranties on dysons? i know kirby's have a lifetime warranty.

I love our Dyson! I was hesitant at first about the cost, but it is soo worth it! We have 3 kids, 2 cats and a dog. I vaccuum the whole house every other day and our carpets look like new.

I have a Kirby and I love it. I bought it in the very early 90's, probably 1990-1992. It works just as good today as it did the day I took it out of the box. I have used the carpet cleaner many times but the problem really isn't the way it cleans it is the actual Kirby brand cleaner. I bought a generic cleaner and it works much better. I buy the bags off of Ebay and paid about $20 for 27 bags which lasts a couple years. When my Kirby dies, eventually, I will probably buy another one. Kirby has a lifetime guarantee which means that they will service the motor as long as you pay a service fee. It was $149.00 fifteen years ago, I would think that it is a lot more now. Kirby is a lifetime vacuum. I don't know about Dyson. I paid about $1000.00 when I bought it. It is at least 16 years old but I think it is more like 17 or 18. It may seem like a lot of money for a vacuum, but not when it is probably the last vacuum you will ever buy or if not it will be the last vacuum for a very very long time.
Now, me personally, I would buy a used one off of Ebay if I was going for the Kirby. You will save a lot of money and still get the quality. If I was going to buy a Dyson, I would wait until it was on sale or use the 20% coupon for Bed Bath and Beyond. On a $400 Dyson, that will save you $80.

I forgot to add, if you do decide to buy the Kirby and to buy it new. Just keep telling them that it is too much money. They will drop the price and keep telling them it is too much. Wait until they won't go any lower, then as they are packing up and getting ready to walk out the door, tell them that if they can get another $200 off the price that you will buy it. You will be amazed at how easily that $200 will come off the price.

After hearing rave reviews about the Dyson Animal (from friends at work), I decided purchase the DC14 after my kids got a cat. I previously had a Hoover Windtunnel-bag vacuum and although I LOVED the Dyson, I thought it was very comparable to the Hoover with suction. I also LOVED the hose attachments on the Dyson as it was so handy to just press a button and have the hose easily at your fingertips, without having to attach several pieces of plastic on to the vacuum hose to have this function. The Kirby sales crew came to my door a couple years later and sold me on the Kirby. It was tough to agree to the price, but we negotiated it for approx $12-$13 hundred, which included the shampoo system, free, filtered bags for the first year and I did not have to give up my vacuum. (Whether you give up your vacuum or not, it doesn't affect the price we later realized). Needless to say, we ended up selling our Dyson on Craigslist (which of course went towards our Kirby bill) and I have no regrets. They've made the Kirby much lighter these days along with a self-propel so you can barely tell your pushing it. The suction is absolutely amazing, the attachments (dusting, suction pressure adjustment, wall brush, keyboard cleaner) are all awesome. I never thought about it much before, but now being able to use the Kirby on all of our beds, gives me such piece of mind as you wouldn't believe the 'dust mites' the vacuum picked up in the demonstration. Also couldn't believe all the dirt and particles the Kirby still picked up in the same spot that I had vacuumed several times over with my Dyson. It's not as sleek looking as the Dyson, but overall, I truly do feel the Kirby was a very good investment for us. I hope this helps!

I will add another plug for the Dyson! My in-laws bought us one about 2 years ago (they got one for themselves, and the one they bought us was only about $325 because it was an open box and all, but there was nothing wrong with it).
We have a full-blooded black Lab, a chocolate Lab mix, two cats (one long-haired) and four kids, ages 10 down to 9 months. I can't say enough good things about it. The hose is great for reaching just about anywhere. It works well in vacuuming out the van too! I vacuum about 5 times a week and it gets up just about everything! The suction can't be beat.
Even if my in-laws had not bought us one, I would have saved my pennies and purchased one. It's my favorite appliance (besides the washer and dryer!).
