hello ladies!

about two weeks ago the kirby people came and gave my carpet a complimentary cleaning...and surprisingly did not try to force me to buy a kirby

i wanted to know...who here has a dyson, who here has a kirby, and what is your experience with it?

i have this HORRIBLE carpet that i cannot get rid of per our lease agreement and that kirby picked up all TYPES of CRUD from the carpet! my entire house smelled TONS better when they got done vacuuming...and the things that thing does are amazing (turns into a leaf blower, and floor washer, etc.etc.)

but as most know, a new kirby is pushing 2,000.00

i was reading around, and i see alot of folk love their dyson. i have never tried one...but i hear they are wonderful.

i need a great vacuum cleaner because i cannot take the dirt in these carpets anymore...but my limit is 400.00.

i went on ebay and found some great used (and even a few new) kirby's in that price range...and i know the most expensive dyson for household use is about 400.00ish...

i did NOT like the way the kirby shampooed my carpets...but i DID love the way it vacuumed. i have another carpet cleaner (not bissell but another--can't remember the name right now)...and i think it cleans my carpets better than that kirby did. so i am wondering...what's better for carpets...the dyson, the kirby, or it doesn't matter?

help!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my dyson. I bought one about 2 years ago when target had a great sale plus gift card with purchase plus I had a target % off coupon. I got the $500 model for around $200 something. My Target had them on clearance for $250 this week and I was VERY tempted to buy a 2nd one (I have a 3 level home and am 6 months pregnant so I decided it would be nice to get a vacuum for each floor so I don't have to carry it up and down the stairs). Anyway the other day I talked myself out of it, then went back today to get it (at my dh's suggestion) but they had already sold out. No surprise.
I've never had a Kirby though, I would never spend that much for a vacuum.

I love my dyson also. I have the animal model...the one for those that have pets. It works great on picking up dog hair. We use to have problems with "doggy" smell when you walk into the house. But with the dyson, don't have that problem anymore. We've had ours for 3yrs and it still works great. I vacuum several times a week and its amazing how much crud it picks up that you don't even realize is in the carpet.

Love my Kirby... bought it brand new.... 6 years ago and it still works like a charm! Although, I have to say, I've never used it for anything but vaccuming.

ETA - I HATE canaster vaccums. I do not want to see what comes out of my carpet!

I just got the Dyson Animal and I LOVE it!!!!! It works great. I didn't tell anyone I had gotten it....and when my mom walked in the house she asked me if I had shampooed the rugs LOL....I said no I vacuumed. I bought it at Home Depot and it was on sale from $545.00 to $395.00. I would really recommend the Dyson.

Kirbys are now $2K? (They ALWAYS negotiate down if you hedge.) I only paid $800 something for mine, but that was back in '84. I really liked my Kirby - sucked it all up. BUT, after a few years (maybe 5 or so) the motor started smelling like a smoke smell when it was on, even w/new belts. We had it repaired a few times to no avail. The other thing was how heavy that sucker was.

And as for the shampooing, I didn't like it. It just never got enough of the suds out, and any suds left behind is going to attract dirt all the more. It was fine for cleaning my apartments, but I never did it once I bought my own home.

I had persian cats, and the fur just loved to wrap itself around the brush. But I liked that I could take it apart easily to clean it. And I liked having the blower attachment.

I have a kirby they are about twice what I paid for mine now. They are very heavy but they do work well. The bags can get high but if you check out repair stores you can find some that will work just as well with out the kirby name.

I have never used mine for anything but a vaccum.
