we have a lot of kids runing in and out of the house and bring in a lot of the 'outside' inside. I am constantly vacuming the stairs but they never seem to get as clean as the carpeted floor.

I am so tired of lugging a heavy vacumn up the stairs and going over each stair - only to have stuff still left on the stairs.

Am i missing some special techniques involved in cleaning carpeted stairs?

heeeelp!!

I have used a lint roller on our carpeted stairs, but if a vacuum isn't getting it, I'm not sure if the lint roller would get everything, either.

The best way I've found, other than a lint roller, is using the attachments to a vacuum. Not sure if you have a canister vac or a vac w/ attachments, but the crevice tool can get in the corners pretty well.

This is why we pulled the carpet off our stairs. Now we can't afford to get the wood finished.

I also use a vaccuum - not as often as I should . Just a note, why not ask the kids to remove their shoes when they come in? It isn't an official rule in this house, but all the kids do it since they also take them off at home, and I must say it is really nice and saves my floors (of course managing the huge pile of shoes at the door is a topic for another post!!)

i have an upright and use the attachments to vacuum the stairs. My arms get very tired trying to lug the up right over the stairs and at times holding/balancing the upright in one hand and vacuuming with the other.

May be I should go for a hand held for the stairs.

That's an unofficial rule in my house too. It started when I had a crawling baby and didn't want all that stuff tracked in for the baby to pick up. If you come up with any ideas to manage that pile of shoes I'd love them.
