For years, I've been a diehard buyer of Scott 1000 TP. I hate changing the roll and Scott 1000 lasts a long time. Well, hubby has been having some GI problems and his doctor said he should try softer TP, among other things. So, just for hubby we bought Northern's Big Roll. It was 9 rolls for $4. That is 44 cents a 225 sheet / 2 ply roll as opposed to the 50 cents a roll for the Scott 1000 sheet / 1 ply roll. When a standard 175 sheet roll of TP is 25 cents each, I consider the Northern Big Roll to be rather expensive.
But, you know what? I use FAR less of the Northern.
As soon as hubby left for a biz trip, I switched the roll back to the Scott 1000 so we wouldn't waste the pricy Northern. That is when I realized that I had to take a big wad of paper to get the job done compared to the Northern. And one of the reasons I was using the Scott 1000 was so less paper went into the septic system. Obviously I was wrong.

We don't use Northern, but DH used to buy the cheaper TP, to save money - same thing, used lots to get stuff done.
When I was preg, and having to pee every 20 minutes, lets say that the cheap stuff leaves things behind, and it's not as absorbent - wiping hundreds of times a day gets old fast - and makes one sore.
I demanded better, and decided to go with the Charmin Strong (the red bear one ).
Well, I'm not preg anymore. I still love it. I can get by when it's "number one" with two sheets, no breaking up, all cleaned up, and it's soft and nice.
We will not be changing back. I can also get it as Sams club - the pack from Sam's lasts over 6 months.
I guess TP is one of those things that it doesn't pay to skimp on!

The best TP that I've found is Cottonelle Ultra. We use about half as much as the regular Cottonelle. My dh even noticed it!

We grew up w/the Scott sandpaper...oops, I mean TP, and used it in our early marriage. I suffered so much...especially when Aunt Flo came to visit. I've been using Charmin for years, since we could afford it - we have been on city sewer for many years, not septic like I grew up with. I've tried Northern and others, to no avail.
Scott has come out with a newer, softer line of TP. I've heard others extol its virtues, but haven't tried it myself yet. I think I signed up for a sample, though, recently, probably from our Freebies forum here.

I've been considering switching back to something a little softer, as I, too, use Scott 1000. But the soft stuff pills down there for me. So even if I'm using less TP, it's painful for me. We stick to Scott. Besides, I think if we went to a softer kind, where you'd have to use less, we'd probably still use more out of habit!

LOL that's what I was trying to say about the cheap stuff leaving things behind...that's why I like the "Strong" stuff - it's soft, and it never pills

Scott tp is one of the few things I am brand loyal to, but after this post I may consider trying some others!

I DETEST the 'lint' from softy tissue. There was a specific Charmin that was WONDERFUL,, but they quit making it. I switched then to the Scott Softer one, and it's AWESOME. No 'lint', lasts a long time and doesn't feel like sandpaper. lol

I've always bought the 1000 sheet scott as well, until DH complained that his finger was always poking through it. So now I see they have come out with Scott "extra soft" and it's a thicker Scotts paper. And I do use less of it. So we get that now.
